Good Friday
“There was in him no stately bearing to make us look at him. . . . He was spurned and avoided by men . . . one of those from whom men hide their faces.” (Isaiah 53:2-3)

As we hurry about our business, it’s only natural to avoid looking at unpleasant things. The beggar crouched in a doorway, the lurid headlines in the tabloids, the tall weeds and debris in front of the abandoned building—we turn our eyes away, aware of our temptation to become fascinated with the morbid.

The Gospels are full of people looking for something, and of invitations to take a closer look. “We would like to see Jesus,” some Greeks tell Philip (John 12:21). A Samaritan woman says: “Come see a man who told me everything I have done” (4:29). Even Pilate invites the crowd to “Behold, the man!” (19:5).

And so today we are invited to gaze upon the ugliest sight of all: Jesus Christ crucified, described in this reading as marred, stricken, crushed, and oppressed.

What do we see there? We see the stark reality and devastating effect of our sins. “He was pierced for our offenses, crushed for our sins. . . . But the Lord laid upon him the guilt of us all” (Isaiah 53:5,6). Ours are the hands that scourged him, the voices that taunted him, the eyes that looked the other way as he was delivered over to death.***
*** How important it is to take full responsibility for what we have done and failed to do!***

However, as we look upon the blood-streaked face of the Son of God, we see much more than pain and suffering. We encounter unconditional love. We see eyes of compassion turned toward us. We hear his voice pleading for his Father to forgive us (Luke 23:34). We hear his confident promise: “When I am lifted up from the earth, I will draw everyone to myself” (John 12:32),
and we are drawn into the greatest of all loves, love that will conquer even death itself.

So fix your eyes on Jesus, and watch your heart melt. “Jesus, I lift up my eyes to you.
I weep because I have caused your suffering.
Yet I embrace your cross with unspeakable joy.
Your love for me has led you here,
and your love is stronger than death.”

Trying to keep the Daily Liturgy and Prayer thread as well as this one updated daily, MG - it helps me too organize and orientate my own day - and very happy indeed that it is helpful to others. Probably only a computer problem, sickness or some other ‘crisis’ will prevent posting and then I will try to update things as quickly as possibly once all is ok again. So far, so good…Deo Gratius! Someone commented the other day to me “to make God laugh, just tell Him your plans” - I really liked that one!
