John 14:7-14
***“Whatever you ask in my name, I will do.” ***
(John 14:13)
What’s in a name? A lot more than we might think. For example, when we decide to make a big purchase, we look for a name we know. We want to buy from a company that has a proven track record. If we’ve used their products in the past, we’re confident they won’t let us down now. We might even pay more for the security of dealing with someone we can rely on. It’s about more than what we’re getting—it’s about who we can trust.
That’s why Jesus doesn’t just tell his disciples, “I’ll do anything you ask.” He promises he will do anything for them, in his name. And what a name it is! We know there is no other name that can bring us salvation (Acts 4:12), and we know that at his name, “every knee should bend,” and “every tongue confess” that he is Lord (Philippians 2:10-11). He’s proven his love for us by dying for our sins and rising from the dead. If that isn’t enough, he’s given us the “guarantee” of his own body and blood in the Eucharist. If there is anyone we can depend on, it’s Jesus.
- And why shouldn’t they believe him?
- They know that everything he has taught them is true.
- They have seen him bring healing and deliverance into impossible situations.
- They know that he has been sent from God.
- He has told them he is going away, but they have every reason to trust that even then, he will still be with them through the power of his name.
- What is it that you are praying for today?
- Whether you’ve been praying about it for days, or for years, don’t give up!
- Remember what God has promised: “Whoever clings to me I will deliver; whoever knows my name I will set on high” (Psalm 91:14).
- Do you know his name?
- We hear it so often, but we should never take it for granted. At Jesus’ word, the sick were healed, the blind regained their sight, and the sea was calmed.
- We should have no fear of calling on his name—because he stands behind it!
“Lord, thank you for giving me the authority to use your holy name! Please give me the grace to call on you with faith, and to always believe in your love and power!”
