St. Philip and St. James
If there was ever a moment when Jesus was frustrated with his disciples, this must have been it. It appears that after spending three years with him, they still didn’t know him. They hadn’t yet understood his purpose, and they failed to recognize just how intimately united he was to the Father. “Show us the Father?” he seems to be saying incredulously. “Just open your eyes and look at me!”
  • This passage can move us to ask some searching questions.
  • I may be active in my church,
  • but do I believe that Jesus is working through me—
  • just as God was working through him?
  • Do I see the beauty of nature without lifting my heart to the Creator (Romans 1:25)?
  • Do I witness his amazing action in history and in my own life? Do I overlook the least of my brothers and sisters, made in his image, instead of seeing Christ in them?

A popular song from the 1950s tells us, “To know, know, know him is to love, love, love him.” Today is a great day to try to know Jesus better so that you can love him more.

It’s a great day to ask him to reveal himself to you.
  • One way to do this is to meditate on the gospel accounts, and ask:
  • “How was Jesus feeling here?
  • How did he deal with this person or that situation?
  • What might have happened afterward?”
  • Put yourself in the scene and ask how you might have reacted.

  • Of course, you can find the Lord in other ways as well:
  • in quiet reflection,
  • in the company of his people,
  • in the needs of the poor,
  • or in whatever work of service the Holy Spirit might inspire you to do.
  • God loves to reveal himself, so whether we have walked many years with him or have just come to know him,
  • we should never hesitate to ask for more.
  • Because the more we know him, the more we become like him.

And that means that more people will come to see Jesus in us as we bring his compassion, healing, and forgiveness to others.

Remember his promise: We are capable of doing all the works that Jesus did—and even greater ones than these! (John 14:12).
“Jesus, I long to know you more deeply! Open the eyes of my heart to see where you are already at work around me, in me, and through me!”
