Daily Missal from Angelus Press

Dear CAF members,

I’m saving up to buy a Missal for the E.F. Mass. After reading reviews, the one published by Angelus Press seems to be the best one, overall. After Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI released Summorum Pontificum, he made a change to the Good Friday Prayer. Does the Angelus update their Missal to when this changed, or does it remain the same as the 1962 edition?

I’m not sure to be honest, but I suspect it would be the original prayer. I have one of the Baronius Press Missals (baroniuspress.com/category.php) and they have the updated prayer.

However, they’re both very good Missals for the Extraordinary form, so if the exact text of the prayer for the Jews isn’t a deal breaker for you, both are good options.

Try the St. Andrew’s Daily Missal. The commentary alone is worth the purchase. I
 
Get it. I have one and love it. The order of Mass has a lot of explanatory notes about symbolism. Mass propers are in both Latin and English. It also has some of the most common Mass settings in Gregorian notation.

Awesome, that is what I was primarily hoping for. The commentary on the symbolism of the Holy Mass should prove to be helpful for prayer.

what’s wrong with the st jos missal? its the only missal ever used for the swearing in of a US president- lbj in 1963
 
I too would like to hear a bit about the St Andrew vs St Joseph missals. I read the comparison guide on one of the sales websites but would appreciate additional insights.
My mom used the St. Joseph’s one.
 
I have a St Joseph Missal.

For a start, the propers are only in English, not in both Latin and English like the Angelus Press Missal. Secondly, the St Joseph Missal is a reprint of the 1953 edition, meaning that it does not contain the revised Holy Week rites. This makes it useless if you are attending a church with the revised rites for Holy Week.

Briefly, the most notable accolade for the St. Andrew’s Missal is its extensive commentary. The missal has a tremendous volume of commentary for nearly every Sunday Mass and even most masses said during the week. The explanation of the rubrics is also very thorough.

The St. Andrews Missal has been around for a long time - It is the same missal my parents and grandparents used, so it has an extensive history. It is very traditional. The most traditional Catholic web sites that I have read recommend the St. Andrews highly.

My copy became so worn after a couple years of use that I had to purchase another. You might want to look into purchasing one of the leather covers to protect the missal from wear and tear.

Propers in English only make it difficult to follow Gregorian chant. It was a move to save spaces obviously but very ill-advised.
 
My wife has the Barronius Press issue while I have the Angeles Press. She likes hers; I like mine. Most of it is what you become used to. ProVobis is correct, missals with English only propers are difficult to follow not to mention that each one may have different translations which makes it difficult to follow. Our Sunday bulletins have the English translations from ??? missal and they don’t match anything that we own. Real difficult when the priest reads the Epistle and the Gospel in English. Sure we get the “drift” but not the exact intention. :confused:

I can’t say that I have ever seen the “Living with Christ” missal. Tell me about it. 🙂

The St. Andrew Bible Missal is different – it’s for the 1965 edition of the Roman Rite. Something closer to the OF today, but still retaining aspects of the EF It only survived a few years before the OF was introduced.
You could still use that missal for the EF - to some extent. The changes are minor.
I felt sorry for the people who bought those at the time - expensive and very nice, but then they were outdated within a couple of years. It remains a nice missal with a lot of rich information in it and the propers are still the same.

Actually, the 1985 missal propers are the same as those in the 1962 missal, so the St. Andrew Bible Missal would be fine in that regard. There was the beginning of vernacular in that version of the Order of Mass, but the collects, antiphons and readings are still from the 1962 missal, so it would be OK in that regard.

They were shortened, not dropped. The last gospel was dropped. My post referred to the propers of the Mass–I even referred to collects, antiphons, and readings.

I wasn’t criticizing your comment as I assumed you weren’t with mine since I said the propers were the same already – I was just adding to what some of the differences are.
