I just bought OSV’s Roman Daily Missal (ISBN 0-87973-120-6), but it’s not based on the NAB, but on the New Jerusalem bible, which made following the readings harder than otherwise, although it’s a fine edition.

I noticed that OSV has a version based on the NAB, but I’d appreciate if others could provide some advice on a good daily missal.

If it were me I would return it and buy the Missal which has readings which conform to the readings used at Mass.

It’s one thing to have a bible translation for private use which differs from the one used at Mass but Mass is community worship and if we can’t all say the same prayers it just becomes confusing.
 
Up until recently, three English translations of the Holy Bible were authorized for use in the U.S. Lectionary: The New American Bible, the Revised Standard Version - Catholic Edition, and the Jerusalem Bible.

If memory serves me, the NAB was recently made the sole official translation in the United States, althouth the RSV and JB are still allowed in some other English-speaking countries.

Another thing about this edition: on some days it’s necessary to flip pages when the readings coincide with those of other days. It seems that more recent OSV editions don’t do this anymore.

BTW, is there any scheme to use the several page markers?

I think you have bought the Fifth Edition of the OSV Daily Roman Missal. I have the Sixth Edition, and it conforms with the readings we hear at Mass…A true joy, because I did have the old one, and the readings were from the Jerusalem Bible, and it was hard to use it at Mass.

Also…While most of the Sunday readings are the same in both editions, the daily ones are not…So…Take the one you have back, and have the store order you the new one…You’ll love it. It is a beautiful book.

I returned that copy and got the 6th edition, which also has all readings of a day together, so no page flipping.

I intended to “test” it at mass on Monday, but I had to go to a business lunch, so I’ll try to make it tomorrow.

I enjoy Magnificat. I have been reading it for the last few months and now its time to subscribe. It goes with me everywhere. I read on the train at lunch at night before dinner. And I like its little articles and prayers and blessings esp for NOV.

I use the daily roman missal from osv
which is based on the NAB. The readings are completely correct. I think you would be happy with it. I was very surprised when the sister with our little parish said it was rude to read from the missal when we should be listening to the “reader” because that’s what they are their for!
Oh well,
I’ll just keep on reading.

Church sound systems are seldom high-quality, and even when they are, the lector often fails to adjust the microphone properly. And honestly I don’t expect neither.

But as I’m a foreigner and often miss a couple of words here and there and get distracted trying to catch up again. So following the reading is very fruitful to me.

I’d been thinking about getting a missal because on Sundays I can only get one if I get fairly early for Mass. And a few weeks ago I started going to daily Mass and I found myself often checking the readings on the computer after Mass, trying to make sense of this or that part of the homily.

Besides, fixing my eyes on the text do help keeping my wandering eyes under custody. 😉

I highly recommend reading and studying through one of Paul’s epistles every day. Would give the same or more benefit 😃
 
Maggiec: I think it was rude of your parish “sister” to criticize you for using your missal at Mass. Accompanying the Mass with the Missal is very beneficial. MYOB is the rule about this intrusion!
