Daily Missals

I go to Daily Mass. Quite a lot of others who go use Daily Missals to follow along with the readings. I was wondering how many people here use one and how useful you find it. Which one did you buy? I’d prefer one that is reusable, i.e. not only good for one year. I’m considering the one published by the CTS, has anyone used that?

I have and use the one published by the Midwest Theological Forum.

It took me a bit to get the ribbons placed. But now, it is easy to use.

I bought the Daily Roman Missal published by Midwest Theological Forum. I made the mistake of buying the hardback instead of the leatherbound edition. About a year after purchasing it, it fell off an endtable in my living room (maybe about a 20 inch fall) and the spine broke. Now the “innards” have completely separated from the binding.

I love the contents, but wish I’d not been so stingy and bought the sturdier version.

I have both the CTS Daily Missal and the Collins Weekday Missal.

The big “thing” about the CTS version is that it has parallel Latin/English for the Ordinary of the Mass, and also the Entrance Antiphon, Collect, Prayer Over the Gifts, and Postcommunion of every Mass. But it’s very sparse on rubrics - assuming that matters to you. What you may need to watch out for is that I think CTS do both a Daily Missal and a Weekday Missal. The Daily Missal (the one I have) has the Sunday Masses first, then the Order of Mass, then the weekday and saints day Masses. I think the CTS Weekday Missal doesn’t have the Sundays.

The Collins Weekday Missal doesn’t have the Sundays in, and doesn’t have any Latin. But it looks like the Order of Mass has the full set of rubrics as given in the altar missal - as I commented above, assuming that matters to you!

I have the CTS missal, which I use in my traveling Mass kit when I anticipate celebrating Mass in English; it is compact and convenient. I find it very useful for my purpose…although I am at an age where the print size is its own small challenge.

You would definitely want to use it as opposed to the Midwest Theological Forum missal that others have mentioned in this post; as part of the Ordinariate of Our Lady of Walsingham, you are obviously in the United Kingdom and the missal the other posters are speaking of is the American missal with the American calendar and that, of course, is not in sync with the United Kingdom. I am afraid I cannot speak to the relative superiority of either Collins over CTS or CTS over Collins as I have never owned a Collins missal.

As for your specific question regarding why you would use the missal…For many people, reading along with the reader is a help while for others, it is not as helpful; you would know best which category you fall into in that regard. It is certainly helpful to be able to preview the reading…or to re-read the liturgy of the word after the Mass and so it serves a good purpose for those usages.

When I first came back to the church I was so lost at daily Mass, a friend recommended this:

There is a UK English version. Though I found it a little pricey, it contains much more than a guide to daily Mass. You can get a complimentary copy and see for yourself. It’s small enough for your pocket.

I no longer attend the Roman Mass, but I miss this magazine.

Thanks for the advice everyone, I think I may get the CTS Missal. Reflecting on the day’s readings later on in the day would probably do me the world of good.

That’s what I am gonna do. We got a Magnificat and a Word Among Us. Both good, but when you do the math, it’s just better to get Daily Missal. Just my opinion
