JULY 2008
Overview of July
(All information has been gleaned from
Catholic Culture - here)

This month is dedicated to
THE PRECIOUS BLOOD OF JESUS
HERE
http://www.catholicculture.org/liturgicalyear/overviews/months/images/blood_2.jpg

The Blood that coursed through the veins of Christ was a part of that Sacred Humanity made possible by the maternity of Mary, whose parents, St. Joachim and St. Ann are honored this month. (July 26). Our Lord’s blood poured out on the Cross purchased our salvation, washed clean the robes of the martyrs, and gave birth to the Church as it flowed from his wounded side. The Precious Blood of Christ — now pulsing through his Mystical Body — continues its salvific work, preserving and purifying, repairing and providing nourishment for regeneration and renewal of its members.

July also provide us with the opportunity for renewal, both interior and exterior. Schedules relax and pressures ease, inviting travel. But, whether we travel or not, like the missionary, Bl. Junipero Serra (July 1), we preach to others — by our conduct, our speech, even the clothes we wear. May we be modest in everything we do, imitating St. Maria Goretti, the young martyr for purity (July 6), and “preaching” Christ to everyone we meet.

The Readings of Ordinary Time remind us that our earthly pilgrimage is also a journey, a great adventure towards union with Christ, the Beginning and the End of our journey. Each Sunday with its Easter renewal becomes a mile marker along the way, linking where we have been with where we are going. May the Precious Blood of Jesus sustain us as we journey to our true home, with Mary and the angels as our companions on the way.

Oh Barbara, as soon as I opened this thread and saw that picture I cried, I think that picture alone ought to convert the world.
Thank you for sharing all those links, so much to take in.
I recently ran across this prayer:
A PRAYER
FOR SALVATION
Precious Blood and Word of God,
You are my eternal salvation.
Lost in sin, You liberated me.
You lifted me from perdition.
Treasuring my feeble soul,
You excused my constant frailties.
Forever, I am indebted to You.
Your cost can never be repaid,
For You bought my freedom with Blood.
I will always seek You out my Lord,
You are my beloved Deliverer!
You are the Lamb of God!

Thank you for your kind words, Deo Gratius! and thank you too for sharing your thoughts, Allhers, and the very moving prayer and a prayer to recite daily through July I think. If the word count on my daily posts will permit me, may I include it in the daily postings for this month?
The picture does depict the horror of sin and its cost. I sometimes reflect that if we really understood the true horror of sin it would probably crush us completely and we get a quite remote sort of idea of its horror from the evil that abounds in our world and the consequences of sin. God is indeed a God of Loving Mercy in sparing us the true knowledge of our sins.
Crucifixion was an horrendous matter and the most barbaric and horrific death yet devised by humankind. I have an account here of a Roman crucifixion written by medical people…overwhelmingly gruesome and a slow and excruciatingly painful death. Jesus would have been quite familiar with Roman crucifixion as they frequently used it in His time and the crucified were dead and dying daily - no wonder he sweated blood in the garden of Gethsemane. Our Lady and the women and St. John who stood by him were extremely courageous as quite often if in a bad mood the Romans would round up family and friends and crucify them too, which is probably why the apostles ran for their lives and hid themselves.

Blessings and thank you again for sharing…regards…Barb:)

Yes about the prayer and the link and truer words have not been spoken than when you said this:
“I sometimes reflect that if we really understood the true horror of sin it would probably crush us completely”. (I am sure of that.)
and when you said this: “God is indeed a God of Loving Mercy”.
(Sometimes I just kneel in Adoration and thank Him for being just that, at times I just say…“Thank you for loving us the way you do.”
Oh, and yes I have read that account of the Roman Crusifixion both here, your account that you posted and somewhere else long ago. Very hard to get through it. After reading that, seeing the Passion of Christ and just knowing what I know about sin, I just pray all day long, no matter what I’m doing, I take very seriously the words, “pray in all things.”

This is not the account I have here which is taken from a magazine article in a newspaper here and far more graphic and blood curdling - greatly disturbing, but this is a link to an account of Roman crucifixion from the web that I checked out and is reliable - it is not for the weak of heart however…
intermirifica.org/lent/passion1.htm
I will be including this link with each post this month. I did post it during last Lent into a thread and your Post, Allhers, reminded me of it - else it probably would have slipped my mind completely.

Thank you , I will read it later, I think I have to prepare before I read that, based on what you said. Talk to you later, thanks again.🙂

Hi again…Yes, I suggest that one really prepares onself before reading the account. I found it so disturbing that before posting it last Lent, I checked with the forum moderator if it was ok to post it - and it was assessed as ok to post…it is terribly disturbing, terribly! I have started a thread including the link to this account in this Spirituality Forum:
forums.catholic-questions.org/showthread.php?t=249910
Though it does mention some non Catholic researchers, I discovered that the account was repeated in part in Catholic Culture during Lent, which is quite a reputable site…and of course just because researchers were not Catholic does not therefore mean their research is unreliable.

The very first grace is normally the grace to pray. Other things then follow. St. Augustine wrote well: “See these things, Lord, mercifully, and free us who now call on you. Free also those who do not yet call on you, so that they may call on you, and you may free them” (Confessions 1:9).

…and then this from the Cathechism of the Catholic Church…(on the Vatican web site)
1196 The faithful who celebrate the Liturgy of the Hours are united to Christ our high priest, by the prayer of the Psalms, meditation on the Word of God, and canticles and blessings, in order to be joined with his unceasing and universal prayer that gives glory to the Father and implores the gift of the Holy Spirit on the whole world. (source:Cathechism of the Catholic Church Part Two-The Celecration of the Christian Mystery-Section One-The Sacramental Economy - Chapter Two-The Sacramental Celebration of the Paschal Mystery-Article 1-Celebrating the Church’s Liturgy.)
