Daily Prayer Routine?

I spend as much time as I can in front of the tabernacle or exposed blessed sacrament(until I get bored and antsy and have nothing left to say to God). I just sit in Jesus’ presence, and talk to Him like I would to a wise and loving friend. I also pray five decades of the rosary, while I’m there. I pray the Ignatian examen prayer late at night.

I found this book, 50 Ways to Pray. It contains a lot of interesting and creative methods of prayer. I pray from it when I have down time.

I thought it would be fun to ask, what is your personal daily prayer routine? Please share.

06:00: Prime (including morning offering and consecration to Our Lady)
09:00: Terce
12:00: Sext
15:00: None
18:00: Vespers & Angelus
21:00: Compline (and prayer for a good death)

A chaplet of the rosary can be prayed at any time but generally after Sext and before Vespers. I’m looking to include Matins (and Lauds) though I’m not sure whether I should anticipate them after Compline or say them before Prime.

You can, I believe, anticipate Matins and indeed this happens in many monasteries. But I don’t think you can anticipate Lauds. My personal preference would be to say Lauds instead of Prime. Prime was removed from the LOTH because it was deemed to redundant with Lauds.

Well Lauds was often combined by Matins (and in the Ambrosian Rite were indeed considered one Office). So I’m assuming that if you can anticipate Matins should you be able to anticipate Lauds.

Well as I said it’s the Little Office (according to the norms of 1962) that I pray. Though I will one day like to move on to the Divine Office (again according to the norms of 1962).

My prayer life used to involve basically just about a minute of free prayer before going to sleep. Lately through I’ve been trying to get into the habit of LotH. I’ve found it’s not very easy but I’m trying (at least Lauds, Vespers, and Compline every day). I’m also trying to pray the Rosary more and going to the Tabernacle more often. I like the idea of looking at the readings of the day. I might just start doing that also.

The majority of my daily prayers are done before 0900. Since I pray the Benedictine part of my routine as a private devotion, I split Matins into two sections. Upon rising at 0500, I pray the preface, invitatory and the first nocturn. Upon taking my seat in Chapel at 0700, I pray the proper of the season or feast.

The Lessons from the Rule of Saint Benedict are rarely more than a paragraph or two. Since they are read on a quarterly cycle, they have become very familiar, and can be read in a few minutes.

Navigation the layout of the Monastic Diurnal can be time consuming. I defeat the editors by syncing the marker ribbons with the online ordo. Benedictine Office of Lauds always begins with psalms 66 and 50, ends with psalms 148, 148, 150. Again, much of this has become very familiar in the year I have been doing this Office. I allow about 30 minutes but usually finish with time to spare.

Morning Prayers are read aloud in community from the one-volume Christian Prayer. In the break before OF Mass begins I recite [silently from memory] the Prayers at the Foot of the Altar.

OF Mass begins at 0800. After Mass, I say the Last Gospel [silently from memory]. In the time traditionally reserved for offering thanksgiving after Mass, I pray the Office of Prime. Out by 0900.

I do not pray mid-day offices of Terce-Sext-None. I pick up again with Vespers before dinner and finish up with Compline before retiring. Out by 0100. Piece of cake.

My sorely lacking base schedule (M-Th):

7:45am - Lauds (When I go to Mass in the morning)
2:10pm - Daytime Prayer (in the adoration chapel)
3:40pm - Vespers (in the adoration chapel)
Directly before bed (between 10:30pm and 2:00am ) - Any novenas I’m doing, night prayer

If my daily schedule is different, and I’m in a chapel, I’ll usually pray an hour from the office. I also sing vespers on Tuesdays with some friends of mine instead of saying it.

I’ve only following this routine for a short time, and like rhiannonh, I am flexible.

– whenever I open my eyes, I do a quick morning offering
– between 5:30 - 6AM (or something like that), I pray laudes and prime. If I don’t get to pray them at home, I pray them during my morning commute.
– Sext around 12 PM (rarely)
– None around 3 PM (rarely)
– Vespers during my evening commute (between 6-7:30 PM)
– Compline sometime (between 9-11PM)
– Rosary - right before bed (1-2x a week).

Other prayers at any time during the day or evening.

I am still experimenting on what I am able to do, but I hope to get into a regular routine soon.

What I always pray is the morning offering, Laudes and Compline.

Here’s a tip: If you’re having trouble getting an hour in, or having trouble making yourself get an hour in, make a firm commitment to say that hour at a certain time, maybe even on certan days. That’s how I got into the habit of saying compline every night. I said to myself one day: From now on, I will not go to bed until I pray compline. No matter what. You could try the same thing. Try something like this: make the comittment to pray Sext every M, W, and F at noon. No matter what. Before long, it will become second nature.

That’s what worked for me.

I can do an hour, but I marvel at those who do like 5 hours. Unless they are religious who do a lot of it in community.

By the way, to my chagrin I woke up at about 5:30 today.

The good thing is I was able to do the Latin rosary with traditional catholic radio and then I was able to do Prime as well.

Compline is not usually a problem for me unless I deliberately don’t pray it.

Are you a Benedictine?

No, I am not currently a Benedictine Oblate. I offer Morning Prayers and OF Mass at the provincial headquarters of a missionary religious congregation of the Catholic Church. On their campus is a retreat center and residential house with a small chapel. Attending the daily morning services are about ten priests, ten religious brothers and ten lay Catholics [including me].

For Lent 2010, I wanted to begin assisting daily Mass. None of my local parishes had daily morning Mass scheduled for every weekday. My search for a dependable daily Mass led me to this community. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Divine_Word_Missionaries

In addition to OF Mass, Morning Prayers from the modern Liturgy of the Hours is done in community. Praying the MP daily, I became interested in it’s history, which led to earlier versions of the Divine Office. For me, the most interesting and accessible was the Benedictine Monastic Office. It dates back to the 6th century, the books are available in English and Latin, and there is an online ordo available.

I typically chant the major hours: Vigils, Lauds, Vespers.

Invitatory and Vigils including chanted readings: about 30 minutes (recto-tono in French)
Lauds and Vespers: approx. 20-25 minutes; I alternate Latin (Gregorian chant) one week, and French (Gregorian antiphons with French chanted psalmody) the other.

The minor hours, Terce, Sexte and None I recite quietly in my cube at work. Six minutes is about right.

Compline, I usually chant in Latin on Sundays (15 min.) or recite in bed on workdays (about 10 min). Sometimes I chant Compline on workdays if I have time.

The toughest is Vigils of Sundays and feasts; there’s a third nocturne, Gospel reading, Te Deum, Te Decet Laus. I will admit that sometimes on those days I just use the Roman Office (Office of Readings) instead of the Monastic Office, for feasts that fall on a weekday. I have a 60 mile each way commute… there are limits.

Well, 5 minutes to Vespers, 1st Vespers of the first Sunday in Advent!
