It seems I still have the remnant of Protestant glasses on. I have read James over and over and never really saw this verse for what it is until it came to me in the form of an email as a daily verse.

James 4:17 Therefore to him that knoweth to do good, and doeth it not, to him it is sin.

It’s like that commerical I saw that a person did something good to someone and that someone did a different good to someone else, etc, etc, etc.

Your thoughts?

It really ties into the concept that to he who much is given, much is expected. We KNOW that we must do good, so if we choose not to, we sin. It is part of a properly formed conscience.

Good verse.

Isnt that the same as the good old proverb which says:

A great evil is done when good people do nothing

or something like that.

For me, this is more of a stumbling block to Faith Alone than any other verse…

It says in no uncertain terms that if you do not do what is right (ie works) then you are in sin…

If I continually do not do what is right, i jeopardized my salvation because i place more and more sin on me…

And as scripture says and if you don’t believe in OSAS…

No sin can enter heaven…

It also provides further proof by inference combined with the verse from Revelation for the need of repentance (no argument from protestants I hope) as well as Purgatory… because we all will probably die with some level sin because I am sure there will be things that we should have done, but didn’t.

Yes… You can get all that from one verse…

This verse has nothing to do with Osas. Because osas believers think they are still going to be saved even after they sinned.

Besides, catholic or not, very few people die without sin. but then thats what the purgatory is for. 😃

Exactly why I put the disclaimer… this verse is no problem for OSAS because they believe they can continue to live in sin and it be ok if they where at one point ‘truly saved’

I mainly threw this in here to quell that debate before it started…

AgnosThiest suffers from the inability to read thorougly and commprehend what is actually being said or implied. He writes before he thinks…😃

I would rather this debate not descend into a 'well, per OSAS you can’t loose it"

The argument I put forth really only applies to those that do NOT believe in OSAS…

So, I was putting a disclaimer saying “I understand however, if you are OSAS that this argument does not work for you”

Thats all I was trying to say…

Per their theology… they would say you wouldn’t WANT to do sin, but continually not doing what is right, and thus causing sin, still can’t separate you from Christ if you were truly saved…

Hope that helps 🙂

And as scripture says and if you don’t believe in OSAS…
do forgive me for missing that. its a bit confusing for a filipino guy who only learned english as a second language. 😃

honestly i still cant figure out how those simple wordings translate into this idea:

“this verse is no problem for OSAS because they believe they can continue to live in sin and it be ok if they where at one point ‘truly saved’” 🤷

Yes but this is why Christ died for us. To pay the price for sin. We all die in sin no matter how you slice it. But the price has been paid for. Saying we need further cleansing denies the work of Christ at the Cross. Just as the Jews sacrificed a Lamb for the payment of sin, Jesus was the final sacrifice, the final payment.

At the risk of it turning into a purgatory thread…

Purgatory is nothing more than the LAST time he covers us with his blood… it is a state, like being in labor, not a place…

If you believe you can get into heave with sin, this goes counter to scripture…

We have to be forgiven, and as you mentioned, he paid the one time price…

HE doesn’t need to do anything else to cover our sins…

But while on earth, we have to continually repent as scripture says…

And if we die in His good graces, he will forgive us One last time…

Purgatory is because of Gods grace, not in spite of it…

Otherwise, very few would make it to heaven because we all will die with some level of sin…

Anyway… I do not wish to derail so if you wish to continue further i simply ask you open a new thread:)

Let me reiterate…

PURGATORY IS SIMPLY A WORD USED TO SAY THE LAST TIME WE NEED TO BE FORGIVEN OF OUR SIN AND THEIR CONSEQUENCES…

Nothing more, nothing less…

Yes I agree that we should not derail the thread and I’ve seen this comment on purgatory before. The question you can answer in another thread then is if purgatory is an instantaneous cleansing, why are we taught that you can spend a very long time there? Why do we pray for souls to get out if it’s instantaneous? How is it then that the RCC can claim anyone went directly to Heaven bypassing purgatory? The claim that is made here is because the meritorious works are above what is needed. Again we get back to a works based faith which is not what Christ is all about. Create the thread and answer and I’ll be happy to participate.

Since you are the one that has an issue with the final state of purfication (purgatory), why don’t you then create the thread? I and others will engage you in a friendly debate over this issue.
