Mr. BobCatholic looks to be very unhappy with his life.
I was wondering, what are “the parameters” at the end of a day that enable you to give thanks to our Lord for that day, with contentment in your heart.

For my life, my family, and my health. For the health of my wife and my sons and my daughter. For good food to eat, and a safe home in which to eat it. And for Our Lord’s promise of much greater things to come.

There is a book everybody should read: “Man’s search for a meaning” from Viktor Frankl, a psychiatrist survivor of Auschwitz. In Amazon, you will find cheap second hand books. He says that once he counted the good things at the end of a day and he found one: the man who served the soup went down the tureen and got more of the bottom food which sinked to the bottom.

In a romance I read, the fellow is rich and he is always unhappy. The black servant always sighed: “His excellency suffers from too much of a good thing!”

I don’t always.

But I do feel contentment, more often than I did.

When, I am not content, when I think of the times I have been granted that gift, then at least I can be grateful.

If I am not grateful then I must rely upon God.

One night a man had a dream. He dreamed he was walking along the beach with the Lord. Across the sky flashed scenes from his life.

For each scene he noticed two set of footprints in the sand; one belonging to him, & the other to the Lord. When the last scene of his life flashed before him, he looked back, at the footprints in the sand.

He noticed that many times along the path of his life, there were only one set of footprints. He also noticed that it happened at the very lowest and saddest times of his life. This really bothered him and he questioned the Lord about it.

“Lord, you said that once I decided to follow you, you’d walk with me all the way. But I have noticed that during the most troublesome times in my life, there is only one set of footprints. I don’t understand why when I needed you most you would leave me.”

The Lord replied, “My precious, child, I love you and would never leave you. During your times of trial and suffering, when you see only one set of footprints, it was then that I carried you.”

Footprints in the Sand

Nothing in this world was going right and I suffered much, but I experienced a foretaste of being in the presence of the Lord. All the sufferings and pleasures of the world are utter trash compared to heaven.

I received this experience when I turned my back to the world and decided I wanted nothing it could offer anyway but wanted to know God. This foretaste helps me put an eternal perspective to trials in this world.
