I read up on the movie and found out that the sheriff of the county where this was filmed is investigating the producers for possible criminal acts commited during the filming. I guess time will tell, but I am glad that the local authorities are looking into the matter.

Let’s just keep promoting this movie and insure it’s box office success.
Yes that is sadly a result of such debating, that the film inevitably will get some publicity and in Hollywood any publicity is good publicity.

But the fact remains we must talk about such abuses and shed light on them so that the lawmakers can take notice of the public’s view and make a decisions so that films like this are not made again. There can be no progress without debate.

We need to make sure we don’t allow such abuses to occur in Hollywood or anywhere else for that matter, and if it means publicity for the film, who cares about that? I don’t, I only want it banned, and other future films like it, not to be made. I don’t care if it’s publicity is enlarged, I can’t stop the film from existing, but We can by discussing it, help prevent other films of this type coming in existence.

We had a controversy in australia over what rating to give the film “Hannibal” because the initial rating was very clearly not harsh enough. Without quick and loud debate, especially from parental groups, The rating for Hannibal would not have been upgraded to the highest possible rating… a side effect is it’s extra publicity, but we prevented it being accessible to younger people and that is the overall positive.

Sorry. You will have to enlighten someone else . Good job at dodging my questions, though. I must say that this is a rare thread/topic where I find it’s defense by some posters odd. So I’m going to leave it with you all:) .
I wasn’t dodging your question. I have studied theatre and acting for many years and have read and practiced many techniques for getting into character. I still maintain that it is not as simple as a paragraph or two to explain different methods, and since you are not aware of them it would have to be quite detailed. That is why I offered to direct you to some of the techniques that I have learned via books. I figured it you were truly interested and wanting to make an informed opinion regarding what it took for her to get into character, then you would find the reading helpful.
Keep in mind these are acting books that have nothing to do with the post which is also why I did not go into it very much.

I am sorry that you feel my postings are odd and that you no longer will continue the conversation.
If I have offended you I am sorry.

This is what frustrates me and makes me wonder if the producers aren’t purposely generating controversy. No one from this movie wants to go on air and speak about this scene. Let’s face it, the basic synopsis for this movie sounds boring but creating controversy would get people’s attention even if only enough to see what all the fuss is about. That creates money for the people involved.

Withholding judgement until the movie comes out is fair but I think that it is appropriate for us to also be concerned with the idea that the rape of a child might be portrayed.
I agree that the sensationalism and mixed messages may be a ploy for more attention, in fact I’m Positive it is.

I also agree that there is cause for concern, however I will still withold my judgement until I can get the facts.

Today I heard a reviewer discuss this film on a radio station. He was discussing the issue of a young actress in this type of scene. At the end of the conversation, the reviewer added that the movie is actually a very poor film and the hope is that the controversy will bring in some box office.

I see a lot of “she is just acting”, “she’s a very good actress”, the scene is not graphic, etc.

My daughter is turning ten and, if presented with the words rape, or sex, would have no clue what they meant. She doesn’t need to know. When she does, I will be the one to explain it. If she did know…if she had been exposed to the kind of lifestyle Miss Fanning may (or may not) have been exposed to, it still is not right to further expose. If, when my son is a teen, I find playboys in his room, should I say, “oh well, now he’s been exposed so I guess it’s all right for him to have them.”???

She is not my daughter. Her parents bear the responsibility for bringing her up, not us. What can we, as her eternal brothers and sisters do? We can decide to not promote the movie. We can pray for her. We can pray for all responsible parties in Hollywood.

As far as I am concerned, this is one movie I have no interest in going to see. Hopefully, it will bomb at the box office.

Another movie, I thought was poor in taste

was the one up for an academy award, Little Miss Sunshine.
Forget it!

The question is “Are the parents criminally liable for exposing a 12 year old to such situations?”
The follow up is “Is the Studio civilly liable at a later date from the victim for exposing her to such a situation at such a young age?”

As an adult she may look back at this time and realie that what was done to her was immoral. She should have a right to some redress. In any event the government has a right to protect all children and they failed here.

Anyone else feel that child actors/actresses, and former child actors/actresses for that matter, should feel obligated to avoid adult scenes/films, especially if they are well known for child roles? It’s not just exploitation of that particular child that worries me but also younger fans who might look up a filmography online and find details on the adult pictures. A large number of children may be exposed to mature matters through this.

Another comment, I have an interest in writing and as a result, I look up publication and agency guidelines frequently (have not published much though). I have noticed that most of these absolutely refuse to publish anything that mentions harm to a minor. This is true even in publications catering to adults and in horror publications. Why doesn’t Hollywood have similar standards?

The most respected and honored actors are in most cases those who’ve generally refused such scenes and roles over their careers. Graphic scenes are never necessary. There was fifty+ years of great film before graphic sex scenes and graphic violence.

But this is a done deal for Fanning. The movie is will soon be released (probably to a very few "art’ threaters) and will probably show up on the Sundance Channel in a few months. Few will see it; but many will talk about it.

I predict that this film will ruin Fanning’s career. Big producers will think twice before signing her to play the “sweet, innocent girl” roles that made her a star. The “innocent” is now forever gone.
