Dallas-based food chain to accept Mexican-pesos

Starting Monday, patrons of the Dallas-based Pizza Patrón chain, which caters heavily to Latinos, will be able to purchase American pizzas with Mexican pesos.

Restaurant experts and economists said they knew of no other food chain with locations so far from the Mexican border offering such a service.

“We’re trying to reach out to our core customer,” Antonio Swad, president of Pizza Patrón Inc., said Friday.

Good. Now I know where to get rid of the “feria” in my pocket.
Actually, the use of pesos is not so uncommon in US border towns, including some large supermarket chains’ stores there.
In all my years in México, I encountered only two places where the dollar was not accepted: the postal system, and a toll road in Jalisco.
 
This sounds sort of weird to me. They may cater to the Mexican immigrant community, but when those people get paid under-the-table or with forged documents they are still paid in dollars aren’t they? :confused:

I mean how many people are going to hold on to their Pesos? Oh wait, maybe they will now, so they can buy their pizza. 👍

We live in Michigan which borders Canada. At my previous job we accepted Canadian money (our register would figure the exchange rate.) And there are many Canadian stores which accept American so I don’t see the difference between that and what the pizza chain in Texas is doing.

Yeah…I guess. But, it only makes sense in border towns. Doing it chain-wide, as announced, makes no sense. The largest number of restaurants is in and around Dallas (6-8 hours from Mexico).
Others mentioned that the growing use of credit cards and the desire to hang on to the pesos for a return trip to Mexico would dilute the usefulness of the program.

“If you’re not in a border town, I don’t see the functional benefit,” said Juan Faura, president and chief executive of Cultura, a Dallas-based marketing and advertising firm.

Do they typically take Canadian money in Grand Rapids?
 
I’ve been from Baja California to Chiapas and Acapulco to Cancun and never had a problem in spending my US dollars. I don’t see that as an “immigration” issue. So what makes this an immigration issue when pesos are accepted in some places here? Is this part of the “invasion” that so many seem to fear?

Right. When I was in Canada, the stores I went to would take Canadian or US dollars, but change was always given in the equivalent currency - no getting Canadian change when paying with US currency or vice-versa.

When I lived in Michigan, coins were coins. I almost always carried Canadian coins in my pocket change and passed them eveywhere I would pass American coins, except pop machines.

Never currency though.

I tried to buy cigs in a bar in Baltimore about 25 years ago with mixed change. That didn’t work out so well.

Nowadays in Indiana, Canadian coins are accepted pretty much everywhere except vending machines, and I have occasionally passed change even in them, nickels mostly.
 
This sounds very much in line with their slogan:
Más Pizza. Menos Dinero.
 
Do to hate issues and even death threats the restaurant has publicly announced the policy may have to be discontinued. Sad very sad
 
It just made it to Jay Leno last night. He said, “what are they thinking? Fast food workers have a hard enough time making change with American money.”

I can’t figure out why it’s even an issue for some and why it would anger them enough to make violent threats. What’s the problem? It’s not even an Immigration issue. I am surprised that they didn’t want to stop the sale of tacos, tamales and enchiladas. I hope that Pozoles and carne asadas are safe too. And, that American favorite…salsa.

i dont know what the problem is. I have never found a store in mexico that wouldnt take US Money. Why would anyone care how people pay for their Pizza?

I think this is an excellent observation! I get the feeling people only take offense or even take notice, if they think the “non whites” are taking over “our” culture. Who gets to decide that America isn’t meant to be a spanish based culture? The American Indians are probably the only ones who have a God given right to this country and they are hated even more then the Mexicans. It’s this moronic thinking that’s killing this country, in so far as its the prevalent thinking that “might is right” that strips the unborn of thier rights and the immigrants thier dignity. I mean most people see a person that looks like they are from South or Central America and assume they are illegal, which strips them of thier dignity .

I don’t have a problem with it…I just thought it was strange that they made it a chain-wide policy. They have a lot of stores at a very great distance from Mexico.

As far as the policy itself…who cares? They can take whatever currency they want, as long as they are willing to exchange it at the bank.

I think it’s good public relations. It sends the message to their customer base and new consumers that Pizza Patron is there to serve them and not just to make money. “Good will” or “Brand Loyalty” is very important in this competitive world.

Oh duh??? :eek: I don’t know…only because this is the*** United States of America ***and the currency is dollars!! If they cannot pay with dollars…they need to return to Mexico and pay for their pizzas with pesos…there!!😦

Good public relations? For whom? This is the USA and the currency is dollars and if they cannot pay with dollars…they don’t need the pizza. How far does this country have to bend to the whims and wishes of people from other cultures? I say…those who pay with dollars should boycott this unAmerican establishment.
