"Damn you"

If someone says “Damn you”, not using God’s name, I realize it is still an awful thing. Some use the term loosely, and don’t realize its grave meaning. I understand its meaning is that you wish someone will be condemned to hell. Which, of course, is not our ability or call. How grave a sin is this, however? How grave a sin, if the one who said it did so while fully knowing what the words mean, yet said it out of extreme anger and now knows they didn’t truly mean it. I realize the one who said this would need to apologize to the person, but was it a mortal sin which would require confession to a priest?
 
If someone says this to someone deliberately and means it, or says it deliberately in anger, that would be of grave matter and adding full knowledge and complete consent would make it a mortal sin. To say it in a joking way that is understood to be joking would at worst be a venial sin.

Even if it’s said out of anger, unless you’ve thought it through and are literally wishing eternal damnation on someone (which I would venture is rare), no it’s not grave matter. Just because the words have a literal meaning on the surface doesn’t mean that they actually communicate that same meaning. If I say, “the ball is in your court,” for example, it’s obvious to everyone who hears me speaking that I’m saying it’s your responsibility, rather than the literal meaning of a ball being present.
 
In ‘Matthew 5:22’, the Second Person of the Holy Trinity, tells us that we are not to call people “fools” in fits of unwarranted, unrighteous anger. So how much worse is it to damn someone to Hell. If this is said, then its needs to be apologised for, and I also think it could do with being confessed afterwards.
 
Words mean something.

In the beginning was the Word.
God spoke.
Words have meaning. We are to watch what we say.
 
Every time I see the title of this thread in my post-list it feels wrong.
