this is a 1/2 hour sermon with a few minutes at the beginning on a different topic and the rest on the dangers of living wills and the importance of a power of attorney for health care instead.

This should be a topic that everyone is interested in and looks into so as to make the best decision!

Now I have a few minutes and will say some of what is in the audio.
  1. READ every paper before you sign it! Sometimes people going into the hospital or nursing home/facility are given a slew of papers and sign one nust out of burn-out.
  2. A little bit of difficulty whether a hospital can or cannot *require *a LW for treatment there–will check.
  3. LWs are frequently too vague to cover all situations, so someone ends up with an easily fixed problem but they go by the LW and don’t treat.
  4. Relatives are NOT the determiners of what the patient with a LW meant.
  5. There can be a wide variety of interpretations.

A couple of other things mentioned: 1. HIPPA can prevent even close relatives like parents from finding out the condition of adult patients–sign papers for relatives to be informed.
  1. Get someone who is on the same page as you and who is a tough cookie, not a shy unassuming type, to have power of attorney for health matters for you.
  2. I gathered but am not positive that adult children may need to designate someone as the parents don’t automatically get to do this.
More when I have the chance to listen again.
