It is an alegory that Dante used to express his personaly feelings on what sins were more grave than another. However, it does find a source in Catholic Dogma. The Dogma that there are levels to heaven implies that there are levels to hell. If greater charity leads to a "higher’’ place in heaven then it bares to reason that greater loss of charity through greater acts of mortal sin would lead to lower depths of dispair in hell. However, I do not believe that this is a positon that is formally defined by the Church unlike that of the levels of heaven.
 
Wasn’t something said during one of Mary’s apparitions that different people would be punished more or less intensely for their offenses? Wouldn’t that imply that there are different levels of suffering in hell?

I don’t know, but St Faustina wrote that the damned are punished according to the nature of their specific sins. This isn’t dogma but it does come from a Saint.
