E3 publicity stunt featuring actors in a faux protest of its upcoming game Dante’s Inferno has upset some Catholics.

Abandon all hope, all ye who thought a PR firestorm would not erupt. Catholics across the blogosphere are angry with Electronic Arts, who hired several actors to stage a mock protest of its Dante’s Inferno game outside the Electronic Entertainment Expo.

The staged protest included signs such as “Hell is not a game,” “My high score is in Heaven,” and “Trade in your PlayStation for a PrayStation.” The actors were convincing enough to fool the bloggers at the Los Angeles Times, who also wrote that protesters promoted a multimedia antigame Web site. EA reps later confirmed to the Associated Press that the whole affair was staged by a marketing agency.

Now, GamePolitics is pointing out that the stunt has angered many real Catholic bloggers. Margaret Cabaniss of InsideCatholic wrote, “It’s been clear for a while now that the entertainment industry views Christians on the whole as priggish, thin-skinned fun-killers… Has anybody at EA actually read the Inferno?”

Another blogger, at Catholic Video Gamers, wrote, “Gamers of all varieties will buy this product if its, well, actually a good game. So instead of engaging in a shamelessly anti-Christian stunt to promote your poor excuse of a product, maybe you ought to work on making this game, you know, something better than a blatant God of War rip-off and make it, ya know, something worthwhile?”

EA could not be reached for immediate comment on the backlash.

Based on 14th-century author Dante Alighieri’s Divine Comedy, Dante’s Inferno is a fantasy action game from Visceral Studios (Dead Space). As outlined in GameSpot’s recent preview, it will follow the eponymous protagonist as he descends through the Nine Circles of Hell to save his love, Beatrice. It is currently scheduled to come out in the first quarter of 2010 for PS3 and Xbox360.

I myself have mixed feelings towards it. At first I thought it might be something interesting and to teach people about the book Dante’s Inferno considering this video game was started because of a christian writer, especially for people who don’t like to read. At the same time it seems to glorify hell and make it appealing to the public, rather than something you would wanna avoid. I must admit though, the art and graphics look quite good.

First of all, not only do I find EA blatantly biased but also, I personally find what they did to be blatantly stupid. There are tons of Street Preachers in the U.S.A. and a quick trip to YouTube could instantly tell you where and who they are. The fact that they blew off money paying actors when they could’ve hired the real deal makes me wanna laugh in my opinion.

This game though… it is quite interesting. I’m afraid I’d have to disagree that it makes hell look appealing. Rather, it does it justice (if you know what I mean). Hell isn’t a realm of silly red cartoon characters with pointy noses, horns, and tails (as certain disgraceful, self-proclaimed Christian comic artists do in their tracts ). It’s the worst nightmare you could ever have… and one that you could never hope to wake up from.

They are caught in a lie, pure and simple. Labeling it a publicity stunt does not take away from what the fact that they played the pawn of the Father of Lies.

That being said, of course the general Christian community does not get up in arms. It is a game based on a fictional book.

Is it truly all fictional? considering the Church believes in hell? Dante may have had valid visions of hell. You cannot exclude that…I believe all visions should be taken in the middle of the road.

Do you mean EA games is caught up in the lie? or the preachers?

I like how exactly two minor, even obscure, Catholic bloggers constitute a massive Christian backlash. 😃

EA games for protest fakery.

Yes, it is fictional. It is theoretical possible that it is a vision (although that presents theological problems of its own. It is surely not the Catholic position though.
