Thanks to all of the Dares to Protestants I have begun digging deeper into Christianity and Catholicism. Now I have a problem. I do not get the Trinity belief. I guess I was never really thought about what I believed. I believe in the trinity but I don’t know how (if that makes sense). What BIBLICAL proof can you give me to explain your idea of the TRINITY. And yes all translations of the Bible are welcome (hey guys anything helps).

The Trinity is a difficult topic to cover. And no one truly “gets it”. It is the primary mystery of the Catholic faith (the second being the two natures of Christ). The Trinity is found in the baptismal formula given to the apostles in Scripture. If you want an excellent source on the Trinity, this website may be of use, it isn’t a difficult read at all.

I hope this helps,

I understand what you are trying to say but what I have “found” in my “research” is that the Trinity was one of the reasons for some denominational splits. I want to know where exactly in the Bible does it talk about God,Jesus, and the Holy Spirit being one. While I have not found scripture to support that belief (of course my sources could be one sided- that’s why I come to you) I have found some that teach otherwise. Deut 6:4,Mark 12:29, & John 14:28 to name a few. I just like to get my facts straight. You know…back up my beliefs.
For further reading:
One God
Matt 4:10
John 17:3
1 Cor 8:5-6
1 Tim 2:5
James 2:19

Son & Father
Mark 13:32 (no one knows about that day or hour, not even the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but only the father)
John 14:28,17:20-23,20:17
ACTS 7:55-56

The Trinity is the most sublime Christian mystery, revealing to us the innermost life of God. It can be expressed formally in these terms: God absolutely one in nature or essence, and relatively three in persons (Father, Son, and Holy Spirit), who are really distinct from each other, as opposite relative terms of the divine intellection and will, but are consubstantial, i.e., identical with the divine substance. Hence, the three Persons are equal, and to each belongs all the divine attributes. The only thing that is proper and exclusive to the Persons are the opposite relations (Paternity, Filiation, Active Spiration, and Passive Spiration), which stem from the two immanent processions, that, namely, of the Son from the Father by way of intellection (which has the character of spiritual generation) and that of the Holy Spirit from the Father and the Son by way of volition and love.

This mystery, only dimly foreshadowed in the Old Testament, is fully revealed in the New, especially in St. Paul and St. John. The baptismal formula, enjoined by Christ Himself, is the compendium of the Trinitarian mystery, which seals the rebirth of man.

What about when John the Baptist Baptized Jesus? Read that.
(Not that anyone understands the Trinity but I believe that is the first time, in the Bible, that all three are mentioned.)

Can you understand eactly how it is that God has existed from all eternity? I certainly can’t fully understand it, but I know it must be true. In the same way , we (humans) cannot fully understand the trinity because it is more than we are capable of understanding. However, we still believe it becuase it has been revealed to us (Mostly in the New Testament). Some scripture passages supporting this are:
“Then God said, 'Let us make man in our image…” (Gen1:26) (I have added the italics for emphasis. Notice the first person plural. Why would God use bad grammar?)
“Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, Baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit,” (Matthew 28:19)
Other verses that might help are Mark 1:10-11 and 1:35. I hope this helps, God bless.

Hi. 🙂 The Trinity is an essential Christian doctrine because it is our understanding of God. We believe that the Trinity is revealed in the scriptures.

I am stealing this from Paul DuPre who posted it on another thread -

Okay. Every living thing is a being. A flower is a being, an aardvark is a being, you are a being, God is a being. A being is a discreet living entity. A rock (not living) is not a being; a rock is merely a thing.

Every living being has a nature. A being’s nature is the essence of what kind of being it is. A flower has a plant nature - it grows and reproduces but does not move or think. An aardvark has an animal nature - it grows, reproduces and thinks but does not reason and has no free will. A human has a human nature - we grow, reproduce, think, reason, create, ponder our own existence and seek fulfillment in God. God is unique in that He is the only being with a divine nature. Jesus is unique in that He posesses two natures - divine and human - completely united and integrated. He possesses all of the attributes of the Godhead, bodily (see Colossians 2:9).

The aardvark is zero persons in one being. A human is one person in one being. God is three persons in one being. That is one of the characteristics of the “God nature” - God’s nature is unique in that He exists as a family of three persons. No other being exists in that way. There is only one God. Humans will never have a divine nature. If we are faithful, we will inherit all that the Father has, but not what He is. We can never be anything but human. We can become glorified humans in the presence of God, but we will still be humans.

Hope this helps some

Peace
James

As you ponder this mystery, please remember the story of St Augustine.

He was walking along the shore one day pondering the mystery of the Trinity when in the distance he saw a small boy running from the waters edge up on the beach. As he got closer he could see that the boy was running down to the sea and filling a shell with water, then running up and pouring into a hole on the beach.
St Augustine Asked him, “What are you doing?”
The Boy replied, “I’m going to empty the sea into this hole.”
St Augustine laughed and said, " That how will never hold all the water in the sea."
To which the little boy replied, “Neither can your mind comprehend the fullness of the Trintiy.”
Then the little boy, who was in reality an angel, disappeared.

May God continue to enrich your studies and bless you with His grace

Peace
James

This is the reason I keep coming back for more!! I really appreciate the response and I would like to say that for some odd reason I understand and can back up my beliefs of the Trinity.
THANX 2 EVERYONE that responded.

There is no one Scripture that clearly spells out the doctrine of the Most Holy Trinity, but it is something that was always believed. The first time it was clearly defined and given the name “Trinity” was during Catholic Church Council of Nicea. You may want to read the documents of that Council for more information on the belief.

There are some Scriptures which shows some aspects of the Trinity, like “The Father and I are One”, etc. But the actual belief of the Trinity comes from the Catholic Church and was not clearly written about in Scripture by the Catholics who wrote the Bible at the inspiration of the Holy Spirit. I suppose, those early Christians thought it such a basic Christian belief that there was no need to put it into writing. The first time it began getting questioned at all was several centuries later, which is why the Church Council was called together to clarify the matter so that no one would any longer doubt the Christian Basic Belief of the Most Holy Trinity.
