Darkness for three days?

When I was a small child I heard a story about how near the end of the world, at noon one day the sun would be covered by shadows, and it would be pitch black for three days. And you won’t be able to open your door for anyone, even if they say they’re your grandma or someone in trouble, because it might be the devil trying to get in, and if you open your door he will take over your home and you. Any ideas what this is? When I was little I would anxiously watch the sky every day at noon and hope that it wouldn’t happen.
 
As soon as you notice (these signs), go indoors, lock all doors and windows, pull down the blinds, stick adhesive paper on vents and around windows and doors. Do not answer calls from outside, do not look at the windows, or you will die on the spot: keep your eyes down to make sure you do not see the windows; the Wrath of God is mighty and no one should attempt to behold it. Light blesed wax candles; nothing else will burn, but the candles will not be extinguished once lit. Nothing will put them out in the houses of the faithful, but they will not burn in the houses of the godless. Sprinkle holy water about the house and especially in the vicinity of doors and windows: the devils fear holy water. Bless yourself with it and anoint your five senses with it: eyes, ears, nose, mouth, hands, feet, and forehead. Keep on hand a sufficient supply of drinking water and, if possible, food also (but you can live without food for three days.) Kneel down and pray incessantly with outstretched arms, or prostrate on the floor. Make acts of contrition, faith, hope, and charity. Above all say the Rosary and meditate on the Sorrowful mysteries.

It’s interesting to think about. Looking around the halls of my high school makes me seriously consider this “chastisement” might be needed.

Yeah, I think St. Padre Pio talked about it…and Blessed Anna-Maria Taigi, Venerable Elizabeth Canori-Mora, Marie Julie Jahenny (I don’t know if she’s a saint, but worth taking a look into her life), and I’m sure more that I haven’t heard of.

It’s interesting because it’s similar to the story in Exodus,
But the Lord said to Moses: Extend your hand toward heaven. And may there be darkness upon the land of Egypt, so dense that it may be felt. And Moses extended his hand toward heaven. And a horrible darkness occurred in all the land of Egypt for three days. No one saw his brother, nor moved himself from the place where he was. But wherever the sons of Israel lived, there was light.

For one thing, it’s not part of the deposit of faith. Another, it’s pretty much the equivalent of a Catholic urban legend. And even its attribution to St. Malachy is doubtful. And ultimately, the test is this: how does this even contribute in whatever way to the truths taught by the Catholic Church? The Church already has a good Magisterium on eschatology. The so-called three days of darkness is full of details that, when boiled down, are essentially useless (bitterly cold night, blessed candles, demons from hell).

Christ taught us what signs to look for, and these are recorded in the Bible. Tradition does nothing further than support what the Gospels teach us. Everything else is therefore excess baggage.

Spend your energy preparing for your own death, instead of some questionable “prophecy”.
 
Of course, it’s not a part of the deposit of faith. But we know very little about the end times. Private revelation is not something someone has to believe in, but it shouldn’t be ridiculed either. It can enhance one’s faith. It definitely helps with my faith, to hear about such events and have at least some sort of clue as to what to look out for.

Mother Mary appeared at La Salette (approved by the Church) and spoke of a time of peace lasting roughly 25 years and the terrible calamities to come before that. Though it is private revelation, I think Our Lady spoke of such things warn others of certain events to come in the future and to remind them that God is still here and is watching. Likewise, I think God spoke of the three days of darkness to warn others as well, saying “Wake up! Fix your lives before it’s too late!”

Best I know, the Church never approved the “three days of darkness” thing, and even priests chastised those who approached them asking to get candles blessed specifically for the “three days of darkness.”

I can accept it as something people can hold on to if they want, but I will have nothing to do with it.
 
I heard about this for a long time. I got the candles… now I no longer have them other than some store bought votives that are almost out. I think I’ll stick to my rosary. Mary’s promises are enough. If it happens it happens and I’m sure God will take care of me along the way to wherever I need to be.

I think it is really interesting…

But don’t be afraid.

Some of these descriptions sound more like Night of the Living Dead or perhaps hunkering down in a fallout shelter than anything holy.
I will put my trust in Mary and Jesus and not worry if it occurs.

I do remember reading about one time some decades ago when parts of Pennsylvania were plunged into darkness and bad air. Apparently a forest fire in Canada created a dense smoke cloud that drifted, and there wasn’t good news coverage then, so no one knew what was going on and it was dark for a few days. The churches were reportedly all full.

Padre Pio was meant to have prophesied this , but he never did. However it’s ubiquitous on the internet.
