Darn, Darn, Darn
Does anyone darn the holes in their stockings, socks or small holes in clothing in linens or fabrics anymore? Is it an art form that is disappearing from American culture and society? Just wondering, darn it. Peace.

I wouldn’t exactly call it an art form dear one.
And yeah, no, I don’t darn anything.
By the time things get holey, I figure I’ve gotten my money’s worth out of them and they look pretty bad on me.

Depends on the garment and fabric. If it’s something I like, and looks to be repairable, sure. If it’s something cheap to replace, no.

Many times, with current generation material, I find it difficult enough to make it look good that the item gets tossed or repurposed.

I feel like the quality of clothes has gone down so much that its not a good use of time to resew something, unless it’s high quality formal wear.

Hahahahhaa. Got alot of holes in your tux dude?
Hee heee

I’ve fixed socks before.

I tend to re-use my worn-out kacki of my pants for things. They become shorts. Kiddo has a kaki doll, I have a kaki clothespin bag…use it for lining things or making things for kiddos.

Hubby uses old shirts as rags for staining wood.

Old bedsheets are cut up as scrap fabric. The nicer parts are used for trim or embroidery, the thin stuff is shredded and used for toy stuffing.

Hubby’s wool socks are frequently made into dog toys. The timing is usually excellent…dog is ready for a new toy every couple of years when his socks bite the dust.

We’re makers though, so we see everything as opportunity.

Very cool. I don’t have the know-how to be so resourceful.

Every couple years? I tend to get holes in my socks after wearing them two or three times. Maybe I need to buy better socks. 😝 I keep trying different brands and different types, but it’s always the same. At least for the white cotton socks. My colored dress socks do last much longer.

I’m somewhat accident-prone, too, though. I’m always getting stains and holes in my clothes.

He wears high-quality wool socks. Bombas, Smartwool, People Socks and the like. Cotton socks are actually TERRIBLE for your feet. They hold moisture in which is not only ICK but also more likely to grow bacteria and fungus.

Most likely your colored dress socks are a spandex/polyester. I wear that kind of sock.

I am not the most careful+ I have little kids. Believe me, I know stains. Best thing you can do is find darker colored kaki’s and shirts with mild patterns that are neither bright, dark nor busy.

And know how to get a stain out. Once you put a stained piece of clothes in the dryer it’s all over. But simple things like using Dawn dish detergent to get out a grease stain or cold water for blood can save alot of clothing.

I don’t think that’s it. It happens more to the socks I wear around the house when I’m not wearing any shoes. Maybe my carpet is just too rough. It happens with my son’s socks, too. Over Christmas break, he quite literally got a whole in every single sock he wore every day. Of course, with the autism and all, he tends to pick at things which I’m sure doesn’t help. My wife and daughter don’t get holes nearly as often. And they have cotton socks, too, for the most part.

Joe. I think the idea is socks then shoes, not shoes then socks. 😉

Joe, do you have berber by chance? It destroys everything.

I had to google what berber carpet was. (Please Note: This uploaded content is no longer available.) I think that is what we have. It’s not super plush, for sure.

It does have a stiff, brush like texture. You’ll just have to invest in slip-on shoes for around the house.

Also, berber gets filthy quicker becuase it tends to dry out the soles of your feet and transfer the oils onto the carpet. When the fibers are coated with natural oils, they attract more dirt. Ever been to a condo at the beach with berber? An ugly brown trail throughout the condo. yuck. Don’t go barefoot!!!

You might have to look to find ones a boy would wear but these are great slippers for those with sensortory issues.
