He wears high-quality wool socks. Bombas, Smartwool, People Socks and the like. Cotton socks are actually TERRIBLE for your feet. They hold moisture in which is not only ICK but also more likely to grow bacteria and fungus.
Yes cotton is terrible and worse so in the winter cold. Cotton doesn’t have much in the way of insulation to begin with and once they get damp they lose insulation all together and useless for keeping feet dry and warm. The same goes for cotton undergarments, gloves, hats and etc.

There is an old saying about wearing cotton in the cold winter and it is “Cotton Kills”.

I have been known to patch holes on my jeans , but I have no idea on how to darn and neither does my lovely spouse.

When I read the word darn ,I instantly connected it to the image of my mum …a woollen sock, threaded peice of wool and an orange that she would use to support the sock hole to work on.

I usually use an old lite bulb, but I do have a coupe antique darning bulbs. I think I asked the question in the first place is I will bet most younger people have no idea as to what I am talking about. They have probably never heard of darning thread either! Peace darn it! LOL!

I darn my husband’s socks.
And repair his clothes. He hangs on to old things.
Doesn’t like throwing things away.
I sew on buttons, which doubtless everyone does, and hem garments by handstitch as I don’t have a sewing machine.

I sewed my babies layettes, counted the threads between the stitches to make them all even, and embroidered Australian flower and animal motifs on them. Handstitched a large tablecloth, embroidering the dinnerset motifs on it, a larger one in the centre, and smaller in the borders around the edge.
I handstitch alterations to clothes, even have sewn entire dresses by handstitch,
so am truly an anachromism

Trishie, you are a gem. I wish you lived close to me. I have 3 sewing machines and I would give you one. Peace

I use an orange too. Mum had a wooden mushroom shaped tool.
Mum’s sewing reminds me of the only time the eldest of my brothers ever did anything naughty. The little fellow cut Mum’s measuring tape into inch lengths. Years later I asked why and he grinned engagingly. The neat vertical lines along the tape were just too tempting.

(It’s funny when you ask siblings “why”, many years later.
My little sister gave me a terrible bite on my back. Of course I was upset. Years later I asked why she’d bitten me so hard. “Because I loved you so much” she said. She did. She used to gift me absolutely every one of her toys and treasures. I’d keep them a little while to show proper appreciation and not hurt her feelings, then give them back to her as sweetly as possible, so as to make it seem right to her. A lot of careful politics needs to go into family relationships.)

Oh, you are so kind, MaryEstelle. Thank you. The intention is the gift. God bless you.

My little brother was looking cheeky ,squirming among the pew behind us as we knelt…he must have squirmed away from mum…and passing behind me out of sight took a bite of my back .I was too self conscious to register any visable pain and pretended to keep praying, but gosh it hurt!

You were no fun then, from his viewpoint! At least your lack of reaction would have prevented a repeat attempt to disrupt the solemnity of Mass with his mischief in this manner!

My husband has just given me socks to darn.
So now I go darn socks.

I can picture that happening in my mind as it is something boys would find it hard to resist.

The big mystery, as far as why did you do that, is the footprints on the ceiling. I am 12 years older than my youngest brother so I’d boost him up so he could walk on the ceiling upside down . The generic answer as to why was “I dunno” for years. I finally fessed up when I was 65 🤣 (he wanted to space walk so I helped him).

What a kind brother!
I have three sons so I know how that works!
There are still things that I occasionally find out about their secret childhood antics.

What a kind brother!
I tried to be, but I was out on my own about the time he started school, still I tried.

There are a few secret things that mom may not know about, but I am amazed at the number of things I thought were secrets she knew about all along.

Milt! I love it!
My Mum used to say, “a little birdie told me” when any of us were totally perplexed about how much she was aware of…and there were nine of us! A mother os such a large family needed to keep her secrets!

I’m sure he adored you, however much time was available.
A brother who allows you to space-work on the ceiling!
He’s any boy’s hero.

I always wondered where that birdie was hanging out too, I never did find it, 🤣
I remember my first leave in the navy. Everywhere we would go he would tell anyone within earshot “This is my big brother.” That made me feel good too. He grew into a fine Catholic man, husband and father, He teases me every year on my birthday usually by calling me on the phone and asking for the “Old Timer of the house.” or “Am I speaking to the old coot.” It makes me laugh.

It sounds like a great relationship, Milt. You’re both very blessed.

(I think the birdie is only visible and audible for mothers,
so they can ’ tell your father’ when he gets home from work!!! )

That would usually get our attention, but sometimes she’d get mad at him like when he busted out laughing over the footprints on the ceiling. However, that did not stop him getting creative with the extra chores.

I still have a scar on the back of my finger where I snipped on the knuckle as a three year old trying to imitate mum.Big black scissors and a sock.

It sounds like you came from a very wholesome family, Milt!

That your Dad found your hijinks amusing is a fair indication of the possibility that he got up to some creative mischief as a child (or wished he had!).

I don’t think that injury hurt as much as the other at that age ,getting my little finger caught in a gate hinge
as my father was milking a cow and my brothers swinging on the gate with me.
Very few mishaps though ,thank God 🙂
