I believe that he started out Christian and ended up deist.

Yes, grew up Christian, was going to be an Anglican minister, ended up rejecting Christianity and becoming agnostic or maybe Deist. His daughter’s death affected him greatly (the problem of evil, etc). Here is a book on that Darwin, His Daughter, and Human Evolution (I haven’t read it)

Charles Darwin and Intelligent Design by “evolutionary creationist” Denis Lamoureux gives some details, contends he was never an atheist
