Let’s take dishes for example. If someone hates loading the dishwasher, they may take a bold approach and load it really poorly so the other spouse says - ahhhh forget about it. I’ll do it myself.

When she gets home with the part, I’ll say let’s make a date of it and have her clean out the lint.😃

Heck - it’s worth a try. But watch yourself. She may be better at the “art” of getting out of a chore then you apparently are. 😃

Sounds like she is a clever one! 👍 You’re gonna be begging for that lint trap within 7 min of her arrival home. 😃

:rotfl: Silly… This is what kids do… You’ll learn. They’ll teach you!
 
Try reading to each other… DW started reading to the boys and I a while back. It’s so much better than movies since the movies are cut down versions of the books. She’s read, The Robe, the Harry Potter books, The Lord of the Rings, and our favorite so far, James Harriet (sp?)

I have great difficulty reading… When she does it, I can close my eyes and visualize everything. It’s great…

this is exactly what my DH and I did last year… although I would NOT call it a date. :eek:

I took the front off and saw how much has to come apart to get to the blower wheel. 🤷 My wife just got home and I mentioned we should make it a date. She just laughed, thinking it’s a cakewalk. But we are having a nice dinner afterwards. (her way of getting out of it 😃 ) She has me all figured out. Tim

Best idea, and very touching. Storytelling beats TV for sure.

Well, since you are in Chicago, look up all the free entrance days/times for the museums, zoo, and other cultural sites around the city. Just Google “free things to do chicago”. I don’t know if you are trying to limit it to “at home” but there are so many cool things to do there, and many are free… and many would be good for the whole family. I know you were probably dragged since you were both kids, but the Museum of Science and Industry is free the entire month of January for its 75th anniversary.

I don’t know your personalities, but if you like junk/antique shopping (without buying, just going and looking around at outdoor fairs) look up the Kane County Fairgrounds-- they have a big flea market on a regular basis in the spring/summer/fall, and their own website… it’s not too far NW of you, depending on where in Chicago you are. It’s $5 a head on the first weekend of the month- but the food is WAY cheap and good (great chilli). The things you will see will fascinate you, along with the people you will meet.

DH and I are working our way through GK Chesterton’s Fr. Brown Mysteries and loving them!! They usually take about an hour or so to read and remind us of the days when we still had TV and would sit down and watch an hour long episode of something (like Murder She Wrote :D).

My mom read to the family the James Herriot series when I was a child and we all loved it! I still have fond memories of them to this day. 🙂

Thanks for that info! DH actually grew up in Ohio, so he’s only been to the Shedd Aquarium. We’re really bad about getting into the city. Anyway, he’s a sciency kind of guy so he’d really enjoy it and believe it or not, I’ve never been either! I’ve pretty much been to everything but that and the planetarium. 🙂

If you pack a winter picnic, there is a lunchroom in the basement where you can eat it unmolested by those who would have you buy MS&I food.

I can’t believe you haven’t been there! In my day (back in the day of the rounded orangey-yellow rented schoolbus), they used to drag kids all over the area there once a year. Of course, in my day, it was free all the time.

“All Creatures…” I re-read those last year! We used to read every night we were all home and did dishes together before I got tired of not having a working dishwasher and finally spent my Avon earnings on a new one! My husband reminded me that we haven’t read out loud for a long time so it is time to find a book and just the two of us read it together - our daughter’s will both be in evening classes at the University so they won’t be home that often for dinner.

We have started playing more games in the evenings now - like Scrabble and two handed Pinochle (had to learn that one). Some of the games we do like to play are much better suited for more than two people at a time so on this theme of “date nights” any suggestions? We always have a deck of cards in the house and are willing to learn something new!
