Hello All,
I’ve been dating this amazing, very Catholic young women for about a year now. We have been blessed with a beautiful love, an intense connection and at this point I really couldn’t hope for much more in our relationship. I was raised Catholic but for the most part been away from the Church since my Confirmation over 10 years ago. She has played a vital role in my conversion and in bringing me back to the church. Recently we have begun discussing and discerning the possibility of marriage.
Sounds great right?
Well, I have a 7 year old son with a woman that I “married” due to that pregnancy when I was 20. Here in lies the problem. Understandably, she has difficulty accepting and embracing the fact I am already a parent And if we were to ever have children together, while she’ll be excited about becoming a parent for the first time, I will have already shared that experience with another woman. Similarly, while my “marriage” was invalid, I did call another woman my wife and lived with her as my wife.
Our ability to communicate with one another and our sensitivity to the other’s feeling is great except when it comes to this. She feels I’ve given a huge part of myself away to another woman that wasn’t necessarily mine to give. She feels we would be well on our way to being engaged if it weren’t for this. She has a lot of resentment and doesn’t see how she will ever be able to love me completely because of this.
I try to be sensitive to the pain I’ve caused her and be as understanding of her feelings as possible but more often than not I get defensive, then I get angry with her for not being able to accept me and then I shut down. I feel there’s nothing I can do about my irrevocable past and if she loved me like she says she loves me, she should just be able to get passed this. Which I know is not true
At this point we both believe we are called to be married, but neither of us can tangibly see how this will be overcome except grace from God and maybe not even then.
Any advice, websites, books, pertinent prayers, ideas would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks
