My experience has been different. Everyone one in my social circle who started of as friends is still in their relationship. Everyone who jumped from stranger to dating isn’t.

I think I am talking of a specific type of long term friendship. The one where they see quite a bit of each other, including one-on-one time, over several years (say, three or more), are both available, and without anything romantic happening (or very little). I’d be surprised, and interested, if the successful couples from circle didn’t flirt quite a bit over the time they were friends.
