Is dating for companionship wrong? If you know your not going to marry this person are you just going in circles?

I would feel morally obliged to tell them that I have no intention of marrying them so that I don’t end up wasting months and months of their time when they may be searching for a spouse. That way your companionship would be for friendship.

Then again if you’re very young you may be wrong even about yourself on the matter. Many people date and think for a time “I can’t see myself marrying this person”, but later change their mind. Either way, I would always try to open and honest with them.

If you’re an older person and still choosing to date for the purpose of going in circles, I would stop and seriously consider whether you really want to be married or if you are called to be single.

If you don’t feel called to marriage, why not just be friends? So many people are in a relationship just so they can say they have a boyfriend/girlfriend or so they’re never single.

IMO, dating for no purpose is a near occasion of sin. People fall into lust and have children with someone they know isn’t right–another child in a broken home, or (even worse) end up having an abortion. Dating with the intent of marriage is difficult enough, but at least if you fall into sin you can just get married.

Basically you are asking if you can have a close friend of the opposite sex, and the answer is yes. It is obviously important that both people understand this so there are no expectations of certain things.

I am in that last boat. I am 43 and have really never dated and never had any prospects but I thought I’d inquire on the subject. I do like women as friends and get lonely. As to whether I would want to get married I’m not quite sure where to even go with that. It would depend on what marriage would entail. And you have to have a willing partner. Shows what I know.

There is nothing wrong in being friends for companionship alone, but I believe romance for companionship alone is wrong.

How about you just hang out with your opposite-sex friends without the dating part? It’s a normal human need, can’t just hang out with the dudes (or the gals) all the time.

Umm… No. You can have friends of the opposite sex. You can even have close friends of the opposite sex. But why would you need to call them your boyfriend or girlfriend, as the case may be? If you had to, my best friend would have two boyfriends right now, which probably shouldn’t be the case.
