Juliana, if a friend of yours ask you to company her to an Abortion Clinic? Would you do that knowing that our catholic faith is strongly against abortion?
No, I would not. We are not discussing abortion. However…it always seems to pop up in a thread where it is no where near the topic.

Yes we are not discussing abortion but the situation is just the same!
People can say I am against abortion BUT I am just trying to be respectful so I am accompanying my friend…and who knows I might convert her…this is just thesame situation you are saying : I am against Gay Marriages but out of respect I am dining with the gay couple bringing all my family

No offense, but this is what as known as a straw man argument/fallacy.

In the case of the abortion clinic (since you brought it up), you are escorting her to do a sin and enabling the sin. Unless you are actually enabling the gay couple to sin with each other, this is NOT the same thing. I fail to see how eating dinner with the couple is enabling sin; it is a completely different situation than your abortion clinic example. This is like comparing apples to potatoes…the two things are not even in the same category.

Instead of bringing up irrelevant examples, let us look to our Lord. Did he dine with tax collectors and sinners? See the below quote, from Mark 2:15-17 (NAB):
While he was at table in his house, many tax collectors and sinners sat with Jesus and his disciples; for there were many who followed him. Some scribes who were Pharisees saw that he was eating with sinners and tax collectors and said to his disciples, “Why does he eat with tax collectors and sinners?” Jesus heard this and said to them (that), “Those who are well do not need a physician, but the sick do. I did not come to call the righteous but sinners.”
So…it doesn’t say “ex-tax collectors” and “ex-sinners.” It says tax collectors and sinners. So, did Jesus eat with sinners? Yes.

Again - what, exactly, is the sin in eating with them? Do you eat with co-workers, clients, friends, acquaintances, or business associates? Have you ever been to a business lunch? Can you, with absolute certainty, assert that ALL those people have always been leading moral, upright lives?

Furthermore, if eating with sinners is a sin, then did our Lord sin??? Of course not.

To the OP – If you have questions about the morality of eating with a gay couple, I suggest you contact your priest. He will have an authoritative answer, which would be better than a myriad of opinions.

Yes ! so by going to the movie you already placed yourself in an occasion of sin because you have compromise the beliefs and values of your family. You have not stood up for what you believe in.You supported the movie.

Having lunch with the ex-GF Opens up the opportunity of an affair that itself is the occasion TO sin which is a sin itself, that is what I was taught by the priests
 I said those two were clearly occasions to sin. What I have yet to see is how they in any way relate to the OP’s situation.

Alright…here we go dearie. I am for gay “civil unions” (see Bill O’Reilly). Marriage connotates a “covanant”, a “sacrament”. It is clear…“marriage” between same sex persons are against God’s law. However…love the sinner, hate the sin…does not mean to “shun” the sinner or treat them disrespectfully.

I don’t live in a fishbowl. I don’t have a key in my back and wind myself walk in lock step without any depth of discernment. The world is a big ocean, not a little pond. I cannot and will not point out splinters in other’s eye…as I do not pretend to know what the walk is in their shoes.

Jesus didn’t enter the big party of sinners running his mouth about how bad they are and how they are doomed to hell and damnation. He didn’t scream and yell at the woman who was caught in the act of prostitution about to be stoned. He didn’t stand on the rock preaching the Beatitudes in hell fire and damnation. He spoke softly, with purpose and compassion. He got his point across more by His actions rather than His reaction…from the hysteria around him.

ok …by going to dinner with a GAY COUPLE with your family is an occasion to sin because you are compromising your childrens’ values and beliefs. As a parent you are teaching one thing but yet doing another…

You teach your children :
a)Our faith is against Abortion and you follow by not accompanying your friend to an abortion clinic ( you are living your faith and beliefs)

b) You teach your children that gay relationship is wrong YET you dine with them.
(You are not following the teachings of the Church)

If the boy’s dad was gay and didnt have a gay partner sure I would want to meet him for dinner and I will bring my family but the situation is you will have to take your family to dine with the Gay couple that means they have a gay relationship soemthing The church doesnt approve of.

I have gay friends…I go out with them…but I dont go out with them when they are with their boyfriends because I dont approve of their lifestyle.

Yes they can…it’s magic. I think we missed the memo. 😉

I never said that discrimation is good. Gays are human beings. I just don’t approve of their lifestyle because I belive in the Catholic teaching.

Evangelization is good!! At the right time and at the right Place. This is not a situation where you would be evangelizing and if you go dine with a gay couple bringing your kids along, that means you are contradicting your faith , compromising your children’s values …

If you go out with a Gay couple, you are putting yourself in an occasion of sin. YOu are saying you approve their lifestyle. It’s ok …I dont get bothered.

I can go out with a gay friend, respecting our friendship and thats it but if he brings his boyfriend, I wouldnt go out with him because that is like saying I approve of their Relationship which totally against the catholic faith

(a) doesn’t apply. Again, this is comparing apples to potatoes. Dining with someone is hardly enabling them to sin, as in the (a) example.

My children know that not everyone lives according to the teachings of the Church; they know this already, and they are four and two. Having a dinner with a person does not mean you are saying, “I condone all things you do and everything about your life and its intimate details.”

Furthermore, can you SHOW me where I would be violating Church teaching by having dinner with someone who is in sin? I have yet to see any Church teaching supporting your view, yet I have supported my statements with Holy Scriptures.

They will still be gay, in gay relationships, whether you dine with the significant other or not. Just because the person is alone does not mean they are no longer in that relationship. Do I stop being married when my husband isn’t next to me? Of course not. I’m in that relationship, regardless of his presence. Likewise, your gay friends are still gay and still in gay relationships whether their significant others are present or not.

Again, having dinner with someone who is in sin is not itself a sin, nor is it condoning every aspect of their lives.

You are entitled to your opinions, and, on this, we must agree to disagree. 🙂

The only way you’re enabling the couple to sin is if you’re giving them the Master bedroom of your house, some condoms and telling them to go at it.

There is such a sin called SIN OF OMMISSION! By failing to show your kids proper values is sin of omission. By accepting to dine with a gay couple is telling your kids that gay relationships are fine.

Respecting gays is one thing…tolerating gay relationship is another. I respect gays because they are humans but I dont tolerate gay relationships.

Would you go to dinner with the boy’s parents if one or both worked at a Payday Loan place? Knowing the exorbitant interest rates (clear usury) and the exploitation of the poor and knowing that the food served was provided by the spoils of that endeavor, you’d be not only “condoning” their sin but benefiting from it as well. Do you go?

Oh, if only there were some choice epithets we could use to objectify these minions of Hell so that we could justify our hatred of these “people”, this “Mister Green”. Why then we could even congratulate ourselves for our piety made so obvious in our condemnation of these less-than-humans. Did I say “condemnation”? I meant “charitable education”.

Ah, but money-lust, while directly condemned by our Lord, just isn’t as easy or enjoyable, judging from some posts, to attack. While I lurk here and there on this board I so rarely post because all too often everything comes back to sex: homosexuality and abortion. It’s just so…immature to be so, so, so very fixated on these two issues as if the entirety of our faith was created to root out these two evils and nothing more.

It’s a dinner. An evening in the company of people important to someone important to your daughter. Go. Be polite and gracious. I find it difficult to understand those who confuse courtesy with condoning.

Proverbs 13:20 He who walks with wise men will be wise, but the companion of fools will suffer harm

IF evangelization is your motive for going to dine with gay couple, would you go inside a whorehouse and evangelize there? My point is Evangelization is good ! but it should be done At the right time and at right moment!!

Treating gays disrespectfully is wrong. However I dont see anything wrong with politely declining an invitation for dinner.

There is a lot of ignorance of the Gospels here. Jesus did dine with sinners… a fact that many people love to point out to get out of preaching the Gospel, witnesing or talking a stand or calling others to be holy.
Jesus preached to them, he loved them and converted them. He instructed them to" go and Sin no more" He expected them to follow Him in this. Are you willing to do the same?
I know I am not.
Someone also said Jesus did not Judge people… Are you kidding me??? He is THE JUDGE.
I would politely decline.
Hopefully when my daughters are at the dating age they will be well grounded in thier faith.
Of course I know that you cant always control these things but it sure would be nicer if the story went
"we were invited over to dinner by my daughters boyfriend whose family we have known through our many years of regular mass attendance and Parish functions…

Dating. Is she ready for marriage?

If not, why date when marriage is a long way off? Another current fashionable thing to do?

Disturbing to read a post that says date OK but marriage a disaster. If marriage would be a disaster, dating would not be OK.

Heard of the saying that ‘a fruit does not fall far from the tree?’

Question was asked for a reason. Gut feeling that this is not right. Always trust your gut feelings i.e. something here is not right. Good thing you are asking.

Values do matter. The values you have, your daughter, her date do matter.

You know, when I moved to DC, I was upset that I was going to live in such a secular area. I struggled so much to find a Catholic community and Catholic friends. Then it was like…ok, Christian friends? Religious friends? Anyone who believes in a God? Marco? Polo?

The person who showed me the face of Christ was my housemate. He’s gay. He was raised as a conservative Christian and still is this way. It was weird. I didn’t agree. I still don’t. But all I remember is him and I holding hands before eating dinner when we got a chance to at home, praying. He came to mass with me when I didn’t know anyone else who would.
