My daughter is protestant (we, her parents are converts to the Catholic Church) and was considering becoming Catholic until talking to a priest. Our daughter, as are her parents are conservative Christians so we lean toward the Conservative Evangelical Catholics within the Church) So the priest she visited with about becoming Catholic said the first time they met that she could do an independent study and come in this Easter…but now that he knows she (and her parents) are more conservative she must wait and go through RCIA next September. He told her he STRONGLY dislikes EWTN (which helped her parents come into the Church), and never liked Pope Benedict and told her that she doesn’t really need confession unless she were to commit a horrible act (mortal) which she know is wrong. He also advised her to stop listening to her conservative Catholic mother and father as she needed to see the “whole picture of the Catholic faith”…well this only confused her as we are close and basically have similar values. So…she is thinking that the Catholic Church is no better than being protestant due to the diverse opinions of faith…Lord have mercy and pray for us. I don’t know what to do next…this is exceedingly upseting and troubling us . I am considering writing to this priests Bishop. (He can have his own opinions but to project these on someone new to the faith is beyond understand…?!) I think he needs to know…Would you all pray ! I thank you and am so very grateful for your prayers.

My love in Him always,

Let me know if you need money for postage!!! Write to the Bishop at once about this!! It is sometimes necessary to tend to weeding the garden. Weeds can grow up the best garden and choke the life out the new converts to the one true faith. Pray for this priest as he is struggling, obviously. The last thing our Lord wants is one of His apostles teaching error.

Need a pen? Have some paper.

Try talking with your daughter about how just as in Protestant communities there are those in the margins who really do not live out their faith well, this can be true anywhere. Even priests are human and may struggle with the truth at different times in their lives. It really isn’t about that priest, or even the Pope.–it’s about Jesus. Jesus founded the Church. He left it in Peter’s hands with the promise of the Holy Spirit. Even if 2/3 of the Bishops were in error, it’s still about what the Church–throughout time and faithfully today–holds.

Praying for you and your family.

Did the priest mean that she didn’t need to confess before being received into the church, or that she didn’t need to confess non-mortal/venial sins once she was a Catholic?

There’s a big difference. She does need to confess before being received, but she doesn’t need to go to confession after that unless conscious of mortal sin (Canon Law 989, IIRC).

There is more than one priest, she needs to talk to others, recommend one you know and like to her. There will always be those with differing views in any large organization. I hope things will work out.

As far as reporting the priest, you need to talk to him first, make sure your daughter understood what he was saying. Confusion and religion seem to always be close friends!

I want to be sensitive here, but your daughters experience is why she SHOULD come into the Catholic Church. That Priest doesn’t make the theology. Undoubtedly he has issues with certain things in the Church, but that isn’t THE Church, just his opinion. The CCC and Magisterium guide the theology.

Second, I would ask for a meeting with the Priest prior to contacting the Bishops office. You got the information second hand (and we got it third hand…), and you owe it to him to confirm his thoughts and express your concerns. You don’t know what battles he’s fighting… If you still want to meet with the Bishop, have the courage to invite the Priest to tell his side of the story.

Sorry this is difficult for you.

Good luck with the situation.

I’m praying for you. sounds like a mess. I pray the Lord will turn something that looks bad into something good. Have you noticed how good God is about that? He can take the vilest thing and turn it into the MOST BEAUTIFUL…

I would say that a non-Catholic might not fully understand what a priest is EXACTLY saying…since this is a period of discernment, I would have her join RCIA and let things flow in the normal fashion for conversion. If you have serious doubts, meet with the priest fro clarification. We have no way of knowing what his actual conversation was, the context, or the direction. If you don’t think your parish’s program is strong enough, go to another parish. You have plenty of options.
Be assured of our prayers.

Since paper, pen and postage have been provided, I guess all that is left are a Dictionary and a Thesaurus. 😉

Regardless of the accuracy of what is being said, it is not what is being understood by people new to the Church. The message of Catholicism and Mercy have been lost. The Bishop should be made aware that sheep are being turned away from his flock due to the message of this one particular Shepard.

The Bishop can decide how he wants to deal with the Shepard. It is his decision, and he can not make it unless he knows what is happening. He is uniquely qualified to determine if there is a problem or not

Agree, find another parish & go through the RCIA process.
Praying to the Holy Spirit to give your daughter guidance, direction, strength, fortitude & wisdom in her time of need.

Lord, please help our sister and her family. Amen.

Yes, people will disappoint us. Don’t forget the devil is like a roaring lion looking for whom he can devour. The devil uses people to get to us. We are in a spiritual warfare. Go back to the basic truths, like the Eucharist. Things, that are not subject to mere human opinion. Eph 4- until we attain the unity of faith, no longer subject to the winds of changing human precepts, to attain the full maturity of faith. One Lord, one faith, one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. There is only one faith.

I have a hard time believing that this priest told her to “stop listening to her mother and father”.

Hold off on your letters to the bishop, my panicky and interfering interweb friends.

In anything you decide to do, remember: anything and anyone can be a test on one’s faith; and the harder the test the better the reward…

Praying…

And it is also good to use the Sacrament of Reconciliation for venial sins, as it is a great source of grace.

He said this in regards to our view of the Catholic faith. Both my husband and I spent several years reading and studying before deciding to become Catholic.

Be assured of my fervent prayers for you both, your daughter, and the priest, and whomever he advises that it will be in accord with the true teaching of the Church and for the true good of souls.

Saint Michael, the archangel, defend us in battle, be our defense against the wickedness and snares of the devil, may God rebuke him, we humbly pray. And do you, O’ Prince of the Heavenly host, by the power of God thrust into Hell Satan and all the other evil spirits who prowl about the world for the ruin of souls.

Amen.

Our Father who art in Heaven, hallowed be thy name.

Thy kingdom come, thy will be done on Earth as it is in Heaven.

Give us this day our daily bread.

And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us.

And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.

Amen.

Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee.

Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb Jesus.

Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners, now and at the hour of our death.

Amen.
