we caught my 15 year old daughter messaging back and forth with a random guy online (nobody she knows in real life) and it was extremely sexual. (no pictures or anything, thankfully).

Needless to say, she won’t be online again for a while. In addition to the other steps we’re taking, I’d like to get her a book to read to help her understand why this is so serious/dangerous/immoral.

Any recommendations?

Thank you

Michael

I’m sorry, I don’t have a book recommendation for you, but let me ask you a question. Is the random guy also 15? If so, I would try to find out who he is and let his parents know what he is doing. If he is older than 17, I would alert the police.

Peace

Tim

Yes–if it’s a grown man and he had any clue what her age was, it’s a pervert.

You might want to share some news stories with her of girls who meet men like this and get assaulted. Explain that at her age, if she is messaging inappropriately with grown men, they are criminals, and hence not nice to know. You might also wish to explain to her the relevant local laws (age of consent, how harsh the local law enforcement is on sexting between minors, etc).

That’s on top of the moral issues. But I think just keeping her safe from predatory adults is job #1 right now.

I don’t know, and I’m not sure that there is any way I could find out. It was clearly an email address that was not their ‘real’ one type of thing.

Excellent tips. I talked to her about the very serious dangers. There was a young girl in this area killed not long ago so I brought that up to her. I’ll mention the local laws to her too, great advice.

Thank you

There should be some professional affiliated with your Diocese that can come and give a talk/presentation of the dangers of sexting and such to your daughter’s youth group.
Save them all while you’re at it.
Also, if you have any personal friends in the police force, a little “offline” talk with one of them, (even a policewoman) would be prudent.

The last 5 videos on this page (reallifecatholic.com/video-library) may be relevant. I haven’t watched them specifically, but I’ve watched most of the others, and they are FANTASTIC!! Anyway, the last 5 are from a chastity talk, and the speaker, Chris Stefanick, is really dynamic.

If you catch some creepy old guy I am sure she will have learned her lesson.

Trust me, there are ways of finding who sent the e-mails unless they very specifically hide their identities. If that is the case, you need to show your daughter that information. If you contact the police, they can trace the e-mails.
