Hello Everyone,

My daughter is 11 years old and woke up sick this morning. She has been sick all day. She has a fever of 103, a cough, stuffy nose, headache, sneezing alot and she has an achy body. I don’t know what medicine to give her because I saw on the news that you can’t give kids cough and cold medicine because there’s something in it that is not good for them. So what do I give her then? I have been giving her Motrin for kids for the fever, headache, and achy body… but I almost feel like that is not enough because her fever has not gone down. I also made her chicken soup tonight.

Can you please help? Any suggestions would be very appreciated.

Thank you in advance.

God bless you.

I’m sorry your daughter is so sick…that’s the pits!😦 The motrin is definitely good…but, how about theraflu? It is GREAT for soothing body aches and taking away chills…also it has ibuprofen (or it might be acetometophen–ingredient in Tylenol built in, but they make one with ibuprofen if you prefer that) already built in. I would wait until the mortin wears off before giving her this, but my dd loves that when she is very sick. It also helps with coughs.

Also–I buy airborne, which can shorten the duration of colds, etc…and it’s all natural. It’s best to take it at the onset of symptoms, first sight of the sickness, but it can also shorten the duration. Unfortunately, the rest is just good old fashioned chicken soup, lots of liquids and rest. But, maybe try theraflu…it’s a hot tea like drink…and very soothing. Good luck, and hope she feels better very soon!!!

Thanks for the suggestion. I has actually thought about Theraflu but did not know if she was too young for that. When I am sick that is exactly what I take but didn’t know if it was okay for her since she’s only 11. But I will defintely do that! Thank you! 😃

Sounds like it could be the flu. If you get her to the doctor soon enough, they can give her some meds that will help her.

Yes–it’s really great stuff! We all love it…and it helps your body to relax and get a good night’s sleep.🙂 I hope she feels better…I just get so sad when my kids are sick like that.

Honestly, with a fever of 103 that doesn’t go down I wouldn’t ask Catholic Forums what to do (no offense, it is a great place to find all sorts of answers, 🙂 I’m the first one that loves all the advice here on all sorts of everyday things).
I’d call your Dr to see what to do/use. If they don’t have a week-end answering service call the Emergency Room and ask what they suggest to do. I hope she feels better soon, sound like a combination of crummy symptoms 😦 .

I agree that if you are concerned enough you should always confer with your Dr. That said- as that mother of four- I think I have learned a few things over the years that may be helpful. The things I say are things you can look up on the web also. I stopped treating fevers once my children became old enough to talk - God created bodies to have fever for a reason- fever kills germs. If a fever is less than 105 it is usually the sign of a viral infection- let it kill the virus. Higher fevers usually indicate a bacterial infection and you will need a Dr. in this case. So unless my kids are extremely miserable I let them rest and keep the fever. They usually sleep whether I give them something for fever or not. For nighttime coughing I use the good old fashioned Vaporrub on the feet trick-its great with no bad side affects. For dry daytime coughing I do cough drops- for wet coughing I love guifenessan(sp?) it does not have any bad side affects and it thins mucous so that coughs are productive. I also love saline- if your children are old enough to tolerate a saline rinse like sinucleanse it works wonders or for the little guys the saline sprays are great if you can get them to stay still for it. Also I know this is the hardest one to do-I really get on my brood about blowing there noses and coughing their sputum up. I remind them that that is the natural way that God gave them to rid their bodies of germs. I hope this is helpful I was up last night with a child who had fever and vomiting so I have much empathy for you.:console: PS As an after thought- I have found that by not treating fevers my children get over illnesses much faster than their peers.
God bless you and yours!

Thank you all for your advice.

I am definitely going to call the doctor in the morning if she’s not feeling well at that time.

She said a little while ago she’s feeling a little better. 🙂

redhead, I love the idea of the idea of the vaporrub on the feet. I will try that.

I have never heard of this!!! Does it work on adults too? How did you figure it out? Do you use it in young toddlers too or just older kids?

I have a thread about fever fear right now that basically says the same thing:thumbsup:**

God bless you and yours!

To Feanaros wife
The vaporrub is an old time remedy. I work in physical therapy with mostly the geriatric population- they are a wonderful source of information. I always google ideas they give me and it never fails that I find others who say the same thing. Just google about using Vicks vaporrub for coughs and you willl find a wealth of info.

Sorry to hear your daughter is sick again (still?). Chicken soup? Kids tylenol?

The recommended use of cold medicines for children under the age of 4 have changed. Your daughter is 11 so you can go to your local pharmacy to get a recommendation. They should ask for the symptoms and if there are other existing medical conditions they may conflict with any of the cold meds.

Keep in mind you can only treat the symptoms and make her comfortable but not cure her, as the cold will run it’s course.

Stay away from aspirin.

or consult you Dr. not the internet Dr’s

Thank you all. She is feeling better today. 🙂

Sina, this was the 2nd time she got sick. It is not like her to get sick like this so I was kinda worried. But she is fine now.

Thank you all again! 👍
