Shouldn’t David have been subject to some punishment by the Law of Moses for his adulteyr?

Maybe. The consequences of his sin were to haunt him during his own lifetime, and throughout the entire Davidic dynasty. There is no perfect human government, or dynasty for this reason. This is why we need the perfect Messiah, Son of David, who is our Lord Jesus Christ to bring his kingdom of righteousness, joy and peace.

God specified his punishment through Nathan:
You have smitten Uriah the Hittite with the sword, and have taken his wife to be your wife, and have slain him with the sword of the Ammonites. 10 Now therefore the sword shall never depart from your house, because you have despised me, and have taken the wife of Uriah the Hittite to be your wife.’ 11 Thus says the LORD, ‘Behold, I will raise up evil against you out of your own house; and I will take your wives before your eyes, and give them to your neighbor, and he shall lie with your wives in the sight of this sun. 12 For you did it secretly; but I will do this thing before all Israel, and before the sun.’"
2 Samuel 9-13

This was fulfilled by the various conflicts with his sons and especially the conflict with Absalom which led to Absalom’s revolt and driving David from Jerusalem.

In general, all debts of sin will be settled at the final judgment. The Early church Fathers said that God does not immediately judge and punish sinners, because of his mercy, and to give them the opportunity to repent.

They also remind us that God shows no partiality.

I was told once that the opposite of a “baby tree” is “adult tree”🙂 But I think the jury is still out on that one!🤷
