**Son of dutch Jewish parents, David Goldstein (1870-1958) was born in London and reared in New York City, where he attended Hebrew Free School and the Spanish Jewish Synagogue. At 11, he began work as a cigar-maker, maintaining for life membership in that union. Moving to Boston at 18, he joined the Socialist Labor Party, becoming a member of the National Appeals Board and the party’s first candidate for Mayor of Boston. Attracted to Catholicism, he resigned from the Socialist Party (1903) and was baptized, at the Immaculate Conception Church, in 1905. With Mrs. Martha Moore Avery, he conducted the first modern lay apostolate to the man in the street, lecturing for 25 years, all across the nation from the back of a truck. An honorary degree of literature from Niagara University and a Knight of Saint Gregory, he as recipient of the Catholic Acton Medal (1946) as well as the Distinguished Service Medal of the Franciscan Order (1947).
He wrote several books and a column of apologetics for the Catholic newspaper The Pilot from 1945 until his death.
In his will, Dr. Goldstein left his library to Boston College, asking that his grave be marked “Convert from Marx to Christ”, and directed that “My body is to be clothed in the garb of the Third Order of St. Francis and a crucifix placed in my hands.”
Cardinal Cushing sang his requiem.
