So this is day 2 of giving up caffeine (mainly Diet Coke). So far so good, but again, the fact that I’m posting about it on here may be indicative of something. No major withdrawal symptoms yet, aside from a mild headache. This is actually quite impressive, given that I’m quitting cold turkey, and I used to drink maybe 5 cups of Diet Coke per day. Anyway, please wish me luck!

Congrats! I hope you make it. I was forced to give up caffeine when my heart landed me in the hospital. Sometimes cold turkey IS easiest contrary to what they say. 🙂

Oh, good luck!! 🙂 Diet Coke (and all soda, really) is just crummy stuff to be putting in our bodies.

Good luck! I know how hard getting off of soda is because I have tried to do that in the past but failed. The first time I tried to give up diet soda it was so hard that I turned to coffee to relieve my headaches. This didn’t work and I ended up craving soda and coffee afterward. One thing that I noticed is that sometimes I wasn’t craving caffeine I was just craving something cold and carbonated. I have reduced my diet soda intake a lot by drinking sparkling water and other cold carbonated beverages that are not soda. I hope you have more success than I did! 👍

HEHE!! Today is my 2nd day of giving up diet soda (Pepsi) also!!! I was drinking min of 8 a day

I have a dull headache 😦

I have done this many times before. I have decided this time I have to treat it like quit smoking. It is addictive and not good for us!!!

My advice (you didn’t ask for it, but you know, this is a forum, who can resist)

WATER WATER WATER!!! and make sure you are close to a bathroom.

Something my chiropractor of all people told me (he knows I am trying to live a healthier lifestyle). Your body WILL rebel even if what you are doing is good for you!! He said, when you drink soda, or even smoke your body learns to live with it. When you suddenly takes it away, your body FREAKS out and thinks it has to combat something. Thus the reason that a lot of people will actually get sick or feel sick when they give something bad up. I don’t know how true this is, although as a former smoker (8 months), over eater and diet soda addict (2 days), I do know that it takes a good 3 weeks to feel better!!!

Good for you! You will feel and sleep much better. A couple of Bayer will take care of the headache.

Good luck! I gave up drinking soda (Diet coke) about 6 months ago and I feel so much better! Now I only drink 1 small cup of coffee in the AM - no caffeine the rest of the day and I feel 100% better - not so jittery and I actually sleep better. I didn’t realize how much all that caffeine was making me toss and turn at night. So keep at it.

Interesting note - I hadn’t had any diet coke in all this time and for some reason, yesterday while out to eat I decided oh what the heck, one Diet Coke won’t hurt me but guess what? It tasted DISGUSTING. Not good at all… I have no idea what I used to like so much about soda? It was nasty.

That’s great! I wish that would happen to me…

I’ve given up soda for as long as two years, but I always come back to it. It tastes good. I admit, I’m addicted.

Did you hear about the woman over in Sweden (?I think it was Sweden) who sued the government and WON? She wanted to be admitted into the government-funded 12-Step program, but they said only alcoholics could be admitted. She said that her Coke addiction had ruined her life, just as alcohol addiction ruins lives.

Anyway, I personally think you’re crazy to try to give up caffeine cold turkey. Caffeine constricts the blood vessels, and when it’s not there, the blood vessels expand, and it HURTS!!!

In fact, you can end up with a migraine headache, and aspirin will not make a migraine stop hurting. Migraines are incapacitating. They feel like someone is driving a big nail through your head. People have actually committed suicided to try to escape from a migraine.

If cold turkey is working for you, God love you! But I think the best way to give up caffeine is to taper off. Give up the soft drink, soda, or chocolate treat that is least important to you. A good way to do this is to stop drinking soft drinks with meals; drink water instead.

After a week, give up another one. And keep going. Eventually you’ll be off caffeine and you won’t give yourself a migraine headache.

Just make sure to replace all that fluid with water. People drink soda because they’re thirsty, and soda tastes better than water. But the thirst will be quenched with water.

And be careful about chocolate! Sometimes people who give up caffeine in drinks forget that it’s also in chocolate, and they starting nibbling at chocolate treats which have a lot more calories and fat than Diet Coke or coffee!

Maybe I’ll give it up again sometime. But honestly, I love the stuff. I wish I could get to a place where I just have one Coke a day instead of five or six.

And you know something–when I gave it up, I didn’t lose any weight. It’s hard to give something up that you love when you don’t see the benefits of going without.

Good luck my friend! I quit smoking on Valentines day of this year, and have gone cold turkey since.

There is a three day “hump” that, if you can get over, you can get through anything.

SCG did you make it to day 3??? I did!!! still have a mild headache, although an ice pack on the back of the neck is helping it!!!

Wow, good luck with all that! 🙂

I attempted to give up caffeine totally during my first pregnancy - that lasted for about the first 8 weeks of pregnancy - who knew that diet coke would be the only working remedy for morning sickness! I never even tried with my second two pregnancies.

I’m a moderate addict - a small cup of tea with breakfast, maybe a small cup of coffee at work, and something at lunch (iced tea or coke zero ← I LOVE that stuff :o )… ah well… I can live with that.

Good luck on your endeavor! 👍

The nice part about going through withdraw in the hospital is you didn’t think twice about it cause you were so doped up and didn’t want a thing to do with anything that might make you sicker.

I really am admiring those of you who are doing this on your own. I’ve tried doing it on my own, and succeeded for short times, but it never worked until the hospital heart problem thingy. :o

Once you are withdrawn from caffeine it only takes a smidgen to perk you up on really bad days (like when I get migraines) or emergencies. Like 1-2 cups of tea or soda can really get you going whereas it used to take several cups of coffee. But only do that in emergencies, lest you get back in the habit altogether. 👍

Thank you everyone for the words of encouragement!

Yup, still going strong on day 3!

Kudos to you! It’s tough, but it’ll be worth it in the long run. The health benefits of a caffeine-free or caffeine-restricted diet can not be overstated.

Kudos to you, that is a great thing to do for yourself! Plus, soda has sooooo much sodium, it truly dries out one’s system. My husband had a kidney stone recently, from not drinking enough water, and drinking sodas during his workday, and that was a wake up call to kick the habit. Prayers that you will continue your good work. 🙂

Wow, I made it through the week without ingesting any caffeine! There were times when I really could have used it, but I abstained, though it’s not nearly as bad as I thought it was going to be. I think I actually do feel better, less drowsy for sure.

Keep us coming with the updates. Remember-One Minute at a time! One day at a time didn’t work for me giving up cigarettes. One smokeless minute led to another.

God Bless!
