Dear Brothers and Sisters,

What a precious Feast Day to be seeking to acquire an understanding of Mary, on our 33 day journey! Jesus Himself told us from His Cross on Calvary, seeing her with John, “Behold your Mother”. To begin to understand Mary, we need to obey Jesus and do as John did. He obediently took Mary into his life. John beheld Mary not only as Jesus’ Mother, but as his Mother. John began to understand the depth of her love.

When Mary saw Juan Diego worried, she spoke to him the Truth she learned from her Son Jesus who told her: “Woman, behold your son”. On Calvary Mary received all of us as her children; by faith she saw in us the potential to become mature in Christ. She not only “saw” and received John as her son, but she saw us by faith as her children being reborn into Christ her Son. Her son Juan Diego and all of us were in God’s mysterious Plan for her.

On this Feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe, how beautiful to remember that apparition of Mary to this humble man (another John) whom she affectionately called “Juanito”. She told him: "Am I not your Mother? Are you not in the crossing of my arms?" Truly he did not need to fear the sickness of his uncle nor did he need to fear anything knowing he and his uncle were known to God and to her.

So too, as we prepare to consecrate (or re-consecrate) ourselves to Jesus through Mary, we need fear nothing but rather to believe in the depths of our hearts we belong to her because Jesus gave her to us. She holds us as His gift to her, she holds us as His brothers and sisters, her children and children of God our heavenly Father. Let us pray to the Holy Spirit that we may be worthy of such a Mother, and of God’s Love. Let us continue this week “in the crossing of her arms”, beholding all the Love God gave her for each of us. Let us take her into our lives!
