Day 22 (Week 2 - Seeking knowledge of Mary)

Dear Brothers and Sisters,

Today, in seeking to know our Mother Mary more, I’ll be praying the Mysteries of Light. The First Mystery, The Baptism of Jesus, calls to mind the humility of Jesus, who needed no cleansing for He is the Pure and Holy Incarnate Son of God . Yet when St. John the Baptist would prevent Him, saying: “I need to be baptized by you, and do you come to me?” Jesus answered him. “Let it be so now, for thus it is fitting for us to fulfill all righteousness”( Mt. 3). Was Mary there to see and hear Jesus and John’s words? The Scripture doesn’t tell us. Yet we do know that Mary’s humility mirrors that of her Son. Mary, like Jesus, is sinless, yet humble. We can look to what we do know of her and see that she helps us in our human nature to mirror Jesus too. St. Louis De Montfort wrote in True Devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary:

1. As all perfection consists in our being conformed, united and consecrated to Jesus it naturally follows that the most perfect of all devotions is that which conforms, unites, and consecrates us most completely to Jesus. Now of all God’s creatures Mary is the most conformed to Jesus. It therefore follows that, of all devotions, devotion to her makes for the most effective consecration and conformity to him. The more one is consecrated to Mary, the more one is consecrated to Jesus.

When we ponder the second mystery of Light, we hear in the Gospel of John that there was a wedding at Cana and the Mother of Jesus was there. (John 2). The humility of Mary’s action in going to Jesus, is a model for us. She sees the needs of others – as she knows God sees and answers all our needs, and goes to Him, interceding for the couple who have no wine for their guests. I believe Mary was moved by the Holy Spirit to do this – and also was moved by the Holy Spirit to tell the servants to do whatever Jesus told them. Again we learn the humility of Mary who learned from Jesus through the power of the Holy Spirit.

The Third Mystery of Light is the Proclamation of the Gospel. Mary continued the mission of Jesus, after His Ascension. She kept in her heart all that He said and did in His Public life of preaching so that she could learn and live the Truth He taught, lovingly. Mary as His most faithful disciple followed Him most perfectly. She continued learning, as all of us need to keep learning from Him by the power of the Holy Spirit. Let us continue our journey today, asking the Holy Spirit to reveal more and more to us about our Mother that we may be as she was on this earth. Litany of the Holy Spirit HERE

Dear Petra,

Thanks for your reply. When praying the Rosary, I’m aware that my imagination can “run away” with me. I risk thinking in my own human ways – far below His Ways. Hopefully anything you read and thought beautiful was something I learned from Him, through Scripture or one of His saints.

I’m currently re-reading “True Devotion to the Holy Spirit” which is an abridged version of a longer work, “The Sanctifier” by the late Archbishop Martinez (whose cause for canonization is in progress). See HERE.

At our Legion of Mary Meeting this morning, pondering the 4th Luminous Mystery, the Transfiguration of Jesus, I remembered the Gospel narrative of that scene. I could not help but think of the Trinity shining within Mary-- that God chose to keep hidden on this earth. It was important for Jesus to encourage Peter, James, and John by letting His glory shine upon them; but it wasn’t necessary for Him to let Mary shine before men. May we see her glory in heaven.

The Fifth Mystery, The Institution of the Eucharist, as I think of it typing this now, makes me smile, for Jesus “hides” under the apprearance of Bread and Wine. Like Son, like Mother. We “see” both Jesus and Mary with eyes of Faith until we see them in eternity.
