Day of Silence: Observed in our School District

Actually HouseArrest,

I would rather have gone to the school to speak to someone face-to-face. Unfortunately, I don’t trust the head of the Gay & Lesbian support group staff memeber NOT to try and twist my words around to make me look like a homophobic, hateful bigot.
I’ve never been very good at debating and getting my point across w/out it being misinterpreted (intentionally or unintentionally).

It will be a lot easier for me to just call her out, tomorrow, and explain to the secretary that my daughter will not be attending due to the school’s active participation in the DOS.

If I had a couple other parents backing me up, I wouldn’t have a problem with going and talking to them.

Thanks for your reply.

God Bless!

Denise
Your school has a G and L support group staff member!? Yikes! You have your work cut out for you! But I see your daughter has only one year left - I bet you’ll be relieved to be done with the place. It doesn’t sound like you’re letting them push you around, though. Good Luck.

As far as I know, the Day of Silence is something that students observe of their own volition. While there may be some schools who have people somehow observing it and they ended up on the list, there’s no way anyone has to observe it by law as far as I know. I’m pretty sure it would be against the Constitution if they had to do it.

Exactly. At my kids’ school, it is not “mandatory”. Some liberal kids usually pass out literature. Last year, my son took a whole stack from different people and promptly destroyed it in the garbage!😃 Hey, they gave it to him! What he did with it then was his business!

Some kids don’t talk all day (and this can be a blessing, depending on the kid!), but others talk normally, or even more than normal, like my kids, to protest.

Parents to Kids:

We don’t support sin. Period!
Parents to kids:

We are not afraid of people publicly proclaiming their sins.

Catholics do not shrink in the face of such displays.

You go to school.

And by the way, be as talkative as you can be.😃

May I ask a question?

Let the LGBTQASDFG people do their thing. Our kids in public scvhool go to school, participate in class. Answer questions.

What’s wrong with our kids going and obviously not supporting the Day of Silence?
It depends on what you’re against here. Certainly there is the option of not being silent if you’re just opposing the homosexual sins. The other issue here is the fact that the school is even recognizing the DOS. Keeping your kids home sends the message that you as a parent do not believe this day should even be recognized in the school.

On another note, I have heard that any student can “sign their school up”. It does not have to be an administrator. This seems like a ploy to make it look as though there is more support for the day than is the case. What kind of organization lets students sign the school up? I also have seen where the school can “unsign up”. There is a list of schools that have removed themselves. I am not sure it is an administrator that has to do it? It’s very shady.

Parents to Kids:

We understand sin is present all around us and we in fact are sinners, too.

We do not embrace or support sin. We try to do good and avoid evil. This is evil so we should avoid it.

what happened to hate the sin, love the sinner? A poster above even proved this point when discussing her Catholic school having some teacher participants. Just because your child goes to school does not mean they are holding picket signs for gay and lesbian rights. Remember, Jesus loves sinners too and people shouldn’t be looking down on them, but praying for them. Also, I agree with the posters who say let them to and opose it if they want (not the gay teens, but the actions they sometimes take) - or else you are teaching them to run from what they believe.

Please, let us know why.
Simple, Catholic or not, as a taxpayer I am not okay with any public school condoning this type of protest. And yes, there are some schools that are actually in support if this DOS. These kids should be getting detention for being disruptive and for not cooperating in class.

So, I can protest as a parent and keep my kids home. And yes, I will be more than happy to tell them I did it so they would loose funds for my child that day.

What you all seem to be missing:

IF DAY OF SILENCE IS “OBSERVED” AT YOUR SCHOOL, YOU DON’T HAVE TO PARTICIPATE.

geesh.

From my experience there’s a great deal of pressure on students to go along with things like that, even if they don’t want to.

…they can take prayer out of schools, but can FLAUNT sinful sexual behavior??? :hmmm: :tsktsk: Thank you Lord once again that we homeschool!!!:signofcross: :gopray2:

Well, not everyone can home-schooled and I would not want too because I am nowhere nearly qualifed as those teachers who do a great service to teach youth. Now, that I got that off my chest 😉 I want to say that you are wrong if you think prayer is “out” of school - it is just not pushed on students who do not believe in it (that is a situation for their parents) and kids DO pray in school and even hold school prayer groups for kids that want to join. Also, on this day of observance they are not letting G&L kids make out in the halls or “flaunt” this behavior, so that’s a little dramatic.

Like I said, it’s for parents to try to teach them the best they know and that’s all you can do. You want them to be their own person and be strong enough to not participate but still go to school, however the flip side is that if you tell them to make their own mind up even if it’s different than everyone elses, then you take the chance that they will decide the other way, but you need to let them make their decisions at somepoint - how long are parents going to “make” their kids do this or that? They need to be “let go” and let them make some decisions on their own. Are you going to force them to do this or that or take them out of their college classes one day b/c you didn’t like something going on? Sometimes it’s time to push the baby bird out of the nest.

Why in the world would I keep my kids home from their education today because other people are participating in a protest?

Our counter protest, if you will, is to keep our kids in school. Have them participate. THAT shows people what we think and who we are.

I thought the Knights were supposed to DEFEND the faith, not cower at home.

Cower? That’s a bit out of line, don’t you think. Look, you have your opinion and I have mine. It’s not about cowering, but instead, it’s about sending a clear mesage to the school that this sort of protest is not okay on my tax dolar.

Some of you seem to think the schools are not actively participating. Boy, are you blind. Many are encouraging this protest. Cowering? No, just doing battle by cutting off funds for a few kids that day. As I said earlier in this thread, until the schools wil allow a DOS for the 4000 plus babies aborted every day here in America, I will not condone this gay and lesbian DOS.

Sending your kids to school with instructions to talk it up does nothing. The school still gets their money for the day and all the gay and lesbian kids get their DOS. Every one seems happy and guess what? Next year there will be another DOS. Next thing you know, more schools are teaching your catholic children about tolerance, and about safe sex, and how to use condoms, all without our permission.

Men are called to Lead, Protect, and Provide. I am simply protecting my children from even having to deal with this. I am defending not only the Catholic Faith, but also my children.

As Father Corapi would say, “Wake up America!”

Cowering? Sorry, but that comment is way out of line here.

Let’s examine this idea.

A thief comes into your school - he is a sinner and promotes stealing.

A murderer comes into your school - he is a sinner and promotes murder.

A molester comes into your school - he is a sinner and promotes murder.

A sinner comes into your school - he is a sinner and promotes sin.

A sinner comes into your school - he is a sinner contrite and repentant.

We obviously are in total disagreement in how to handle this. The children participating in this are the same kids that my kids play sports with, have gone to school with for years. They aren’t outside agitators. These are the same people that were in the school yesterday and will be in the school Monday.

I asked my son about this, and he said that he asked some of the kids last year why they were being quiet, because they aren’t gay. He asked them a bunch of questions about rights and about beliefs. By the end of the day a lot of them weren’t quiet anymore. They just had been taking an opportunity to rebel.

Yes, it is out of line. I am sorry.

No problem, and thank you.

What does this mean? How are your schools funded?

Most public shools are federally and state funded (taxes from yours and my pockets) and don’t receive funds for absent students. Also, in warfare, if you will, one of the most succesful tactics is to cut off funding. or to freeze assets. Yes, my three children wont amount to much in the way of funds being lost, but if enough Christian parents took this approach it might force the school principle to re-think things.

I am not suggesting treating the kids themselves any differently. The protest I suggest is strictly against the school. I will say, however, that if these kids are being allowed to get their point across, then they should be able to handle the fact that other kids will be kept out of school because of it. If that hurts their feeling, well, welcome to the real world.

Yes, I suppose that this would give an opportunity for some strong Christian kids to witness to those who are participating. I also think that keeping kids out of school sends a strong message to the school that their promotion of this DOS is not okay.

Look, we will just have to agree to disagree. I’ve taken the passive approach in the past and it has gotten me nowhere, so for me, no more.

Huh? My school system has a 2.3 Billion Dollar budget. Funding does comes from a variety of sources, including property taxes (the biggest), lottery revenue ( a tax on people who can’t do math), state sales taxes, federal impact money (for military people who don’t pay other taxes), and I’m sure there are others.

I have absolutely never heard that any funding formula that uses attendance on a single day. Perhaps your school system does.
