Yet another thing – to answer my own question about whether naval infantry forces are “tougher” than other service branches generally: one reason that naval infantry might be “tougher” than normal land based infantry is that the number of people that can fit on a boat is less than the number of people that can fit on a “normal-sized” piece of land. So, in an amphibious assault type situation where naval infantry are pitted against normal land-based infantry, the marines are more likely to be outnumbered. Thus, they need to maximize their fighting capability to overcome the land-based opponent??? Just my speculation.

Plus, if the marines are in charge of ship-board security … well, sailors might be tougher folk than landlubber civilians, so the marines would need to be even tougher than the sailors in order to overcome them in case of things like mutinies. But I think I’ve read the USMC doesn’t have that role for the US Navy any longer anyway.

Talk to the recruiter. But remember that sometimes they say stuff that isn’t exactly true. One recruiter may say it isn’t for you, while another could ask you to sign papers for going in. Of course, Wanting to be an officer, a recruiter might not be the best way to go. See if there is a school near you that has a ROTC program. Then you can talk with whoever is in charge of that program.
