Dctionary of terms on the origin of man

This thread is not intended to discuss the origin of man.

But, for me, as a non-native english speaking person, I would like to certify what the terms are and their meaning. Here are 3, please if you feel like it, please join the missing terms:

• Creationism - the doctine that defends that Humankind come from Adam and Eve, and the literal way it is described in Genesis.
• Evolutionism - It is the theory that say that life came from chemical comonents when they became more comples, and through chance and environment, evolved till reacing Man. As for the Universe, it would be “a spontaneous creation”, like Stephen Hawking defends.
• Inteligent design - it is evolution but designed by God and Powered (?) by God.

Are my definitions correct, according what in the USA the majority of people would understand?

Are there more theories I am not aware of?.

Sorry to remind that this thread is only and just a list of terms and its definition. I would please ask to stay within these fontriers.

I am most thankful for the answers as I know the terms but I am not sure whether or not I know exactly the definition.

Hi GBY, I don’t really believe that the definition of Creationism is that all of humankind came from Adam and Eve but from God himself. It’s not important by which mechanism God created life. Whether you believe that God created man in a single stroke or over aeons through the process of evolution is not important! What is important is that you believe God did in fact create the universe and all within it by whatever process his will dictated.

From Father John Hardon’s Modern Catholic Dictionary:

CREATIONISM. The Catholic doctrine that the soul of each human being is immediately created by God at the moment of conception.

EVOLUTIONISM. The theory that everything in the universe, including the world of spirit, is explainable by a natural and necessary development from the lower to the higher; and in Hegel’s philosophy, from nonbeing to being.
