Has anyone here been successful converting an atheist/agnostic/deist (such as myself) to Catholicism? I think this forum does not do that well, but focuses on converting other branches of Christianity to Catholicism e.g. by showing how the Church’s teachings are consistant with the Bible. How do you people plan to convert non-Christians to Catholicism?

How would you like us to convert you? 😉

As the previous poster said, we can’t really convert anyone. The Holy Spirit (God) does that.

If you are feeling that you would like to be converted, the first step would be to pray about it. (Even if you don’t really believe in God, you can still pray - keep it simple, and just ask God whatever question you are most interested in.)

God Himself will take it from there, at a pace that you can handle. It might seem a bit scary, at first, but He has all the patience in the world, and He will lead you to whatever it is that you most need, at this point.

A short recited prayer that you can use whenever it gets really intense would be, “Lord, I believe - help thou mine unbelief.”

I was not asking to be converted, and regarding the feeling of the Holy Spirit in me. I feel so numb ever since reading some of Professor Gerald Joyce’s work (who showed me that it is unnecessary to invoke God when explaining biological features) and Professor Shapiro’s papers (which has influenced my views on the origin of life) and Shapiro’s book Origins: A Skeptic’s Guide to the Creation of Life on Earth, which influenced me to always engage in skeptical thought.

I haven’t sincerely said a pray to God in about 10 months, and I never considered myself any sort of Christian in my life. I remember being extremely disillusioned with Christianity after reading Shapiro’s book and Stanley Tookie Williams’ execution - sorry, I mean to “murder.” From that point on, I cannot sense anything numinous in my life.

Regarding that feeling:
I’m tired of being what you want me to be
Feeling so faithless lost under the surface
Don’t know what you’re expecting of me
Put under the pressure of walking in your shoes
(Caught in the undertow just caught in the undertow)
Every step that I take is another mistake to you
(Caught in the undertow just caught in the undertow)
And every second I waste is more than I can take
I’ve become so numb I can’t feel you there
I’ve become so tired so much more aware
I’m becoming this all I want to do
Is be more like me and be less like you
I’ve become so numb
Can I get an encore, do you want more (more…)
I’ve become so numb
So for one last time I need y’all to roar
One last time I need y’all to roar
From “Numb/Encore” by Linkin Park and Jay-Z.

I posted this thread because it seems that the apologetics employed on this website is not that effective in converting atheists, but is somewhat adept at converting other Christians into Catholics. I was wondering if anyone disagreed about whether this is true or not. I hoped I would also recieve an explanation for this trend.

I.
So what Christian affirming books have you read? Or have you set yourself up an echo chamber where you read only those books that affirm your lack of belief? Being your reading has made you sympathetic to Tookie Williams I would say you book list suspect.

God doesn’t always behave as we would like Him to, but that’s probably because He’s in charge, and we are not. Prayer isn’t about telling God what to do: it’s about finding out what He would like for us to do.

Yes, human beings, including people who claim to be Christians, do really awful things to each other.

Know this, though: There is a Judgement Day coming, when all will be set right. All who have been unjustly treated in this world will be avenged on that day.

All of the aborted, abused, and murdered children, and all of the innocent who have been executed, and everyone who has been ground down by the wheels of “progress” will stand up and tell their story - they will accuse their oppressors by name, and every dark secret will be revealed.

What? Tookie has done more than most politians to quell the gang violence. He has done some work in order to prevent it from happening. I do not think he is innocent, but he should have been granted clemensy because he was a contrite man.

I read books mostly by scientists about biology, I am not interested in debating apologetics compared to my interest in the molecular basis for Darwinian evolution.

Someone must have the “ears to hear” and the “eyes to see”

You are spending a lot of time telling God you dont want to believe in him.

He is not going to take you by force, this is not his rejection of you but the honor he gave you to accept him out of love from your own free will.

The Holy Spirit may have brought you here. Or you can blame the posters here for not convincing you to convert.

If you showed an interest in the concepts of the faith maybe you would get more responses.:o

Sure the Holy Spirit might have done something to bring me here. Well, unfortunately that hypothesis cannot be tested in any meaningful way. But a scientist (through an e-mail correspondence) has advised me not to debate creationists and religious apologists because I am unlikely to convince anyone. I mainly came here to at least know about Catholic apologetics, not to be converted. In retrospect, I think some of the time I spent here could be used to finish reading Lubert Stryer’s Biochemistry Fifth Edition and studying organic chemistry.

So where did I explicitly say that I do not want to believe in God. What makes you think that I have said that?

I did not post this thread to blame: I was simply pointing out a trend. The Catholic apologetics in this board is not effective in convincing atheists, but somewhat effective at convincing other Christians? Why is that is the question I am asking.

forums.catholic-questions.org/showthread.php?t=110604

No one here who said they were Catholic initially started off as an atheist… they were all born to a family with some version of Christianity. So I am simply question why hasn’t the apologetics here has been successful in converting atheists/
There are lots and lots of atheists who have become Catholics - in fact the majority of people who go through RCIA are coming from an atheist or “no opinion” background - only a very few are coming from an active Protestant background.

This forum seems to be geared toward people from a Protestant background - but so what? Just because you don’t see something on one particular forum, doesn’t mean that it isn’t out there.

I’ll take your word for it.

I don’t believe, or rather I would hope that the people who are sceptic (which is good within reason) are not prejudice against the idea of God, and would want to know if there is a God if in fact there is one. Since Science is unable ( though some hoped) to distinguish the flame of Gods existence, it is reasonable to explore the possible existence of God. The universe does not explain the universe.

Evolution doesn’t explain why this reality exists, or why any of the things that exist within it should manifest itself at all.

If the universe began, then something promoted its beginning. If consciousness exists, then something was promoting that possibility long before any organic substances were formed. The universe is the way it is because something has promoted and actualised such a possibility for it to occur in the first place.

Maybe you should read books that deal with Questions that lay outside the empirical scientific reach. Science is very limited, and in fact lacks the tools to deal with the ultimate question.

Philosophy is a more practical tool to indulge in. Using reasoning and logic, on the foundation of what you know of your reality, you will be brought closer to the “ultimate answer”, which is ultimately more then what empirical science can provide, especially at this present time.

Try reading books dealing with the “history of science”, rather then just engaging in modern science books.

And get a good understanding of “physics”.

**Knock **and the door shall be opened to you. Seek and ye shall find.

If you have ears to hear and eyes to see, he will do the rest

I am opposed to the death penalty even for vile people like Tookie Williams. I don’t however see anything redeeming about his actions.

You have stacked your reading in favor of your beliefs. I find biology and yes even evolution fascinating BUT they all have a basic flaw. None can tell us where the origin of all things material came from. I once asked a biologist why he was so focused on evolution. He gave an honest reply-he said it was because evolution was the ONLY theory that could explain the current state of life on earth UNLESS you made allowances for there being a God.

The way i look at it we have two choices. The complexity and beauty of this world is the accidental result of a massive primordial fart 4.5 million years ago OR the beauty and complexity is the direct result of the actions of a loving God-who may very well have used evolution to bring all this about.

You woship a god as fervently as those of us who know the Lord do. your god is Science and as your life goes on you will come to ralize what an inadequate and limited god science is. The good news is the REAL Gid will be waiting for you with open arms.

Tookie wrote books to prevent children from joining gangs, so why isn’t that redemptive?

Tookie wrote books purportedly to prevent children from joing gangs but were actually poorly written, gave no coherent message and were mainly written to get him sympathy and support in his attempt to get his death sentnece overturned. Meanwhile this “compassionate” man never once apologized to the family of his Victim and never once took responsibility for his actions.

I guessthere is a major difference between an atheist and a Catholic-you admire people like Tookie-i admire people like John Paul the Great.

Nope, I admire people like Charles Darwin, Peter Singer, Robert Shapiro (of NYU), Gerald Joyce (of the Scripps Research Institute), Leslie Orgel, David Bartel, Jerry Coyne, Richard Dawkins, PZ Myers … etc.

I think there have been a lot of threads on athiests here (maybe a lot lost in crash) but if you hit the search button you might see a lot of conversations and you will also see its well, something a Catholic can not convince you of.
We can explain why we believe what we do- (I mean the others here not me I think that is obvious) what else can be done?

You are not asking questions and say you dont want to convert anyone, yet I keep seeing your “reccomended” reading list and wonder what you are giving anyone to work with here.
