I am not familiar with St. Augustine’s writings. Can anyone familiar with this work tell me who or what he is referring to in the first chapter when he states “the Apostle”? I can’t seem to figure this out.

Thanks,

The Apostle is St. Paul.

Significant theological individuals had nicknames during the Dark and Middle ages; a few of the common ones are;

The Apostle is St Paul
The Philosopher is Aristotle
The Theologian is St. Augustine
The Master is Peter Lombard
The Commentator is Averroes
The Angelic Doctor is St. Thomas Aquinas
The Solemn Doctor is Henry of Ghent
The Subtle Doctor is Bl. Duns Scotus
The Worthy Beginner is William of Ockham

Etc.

In chapter 1, Augustine is quoting St. Paul’s 1 letter to Timothy:

1 Tim 6:15 and this will be made manifest at the proper time by the blessed and only Sovereign, the King of kings and Lord of lords, 6:16 **who alone has immortality **and dwells in unapproachable light, whom no man has ever seen or can see. To him be honor and eternal dominion. Amen.
