Hello All!

Can a permanent deacon wear the roman collar and clerics? I thought they could for some reason, and the ones I see never do. They just wear street clothes. Thanks.

There was quite a discussion on this point on these boards sometime ago. Canonically ( As per Canon Law) a deacon can wear the collar. However, in obedience to the bishop, many permanent deacons do not wear them, while transitional (on their way to being ordained a priest) deacons do wear the collar. I have a friend in Virginia who is a permanent deacon. His bishop has asked him to wear the collar while ministering at the jails, hospitals Etc. He felt a little odd as in his former diocese, this was never done.

God bless,
Deacon Tony

A deacon, has, by Canonical Right, the ability to wear the Roman collar.

In some diocese, but certainly not all, some Bishops have asked their deacons to forgo the use of that Right.

In my diocese, it’s not the most common practice for a deacon to wear the Roman collar, but it’s also not all that unheard of.
