I visited another parish today for Mass, and a deacon was helping to distribute Holy Communion (he was not up at the chair for the Mass, but simply got vested and came up during the Our Father).
I noticed that instead of having the usual deacon’s stole hanging diagonally, he had one end hanging straight down and another wrapped around his neck – almost like a scarf.
I should mention that this was an ethnic parish, and a quick search on the web makes me think it might be a particular practice from another rite (this was a Latin-rite parish but there are many various cultures that attend).
Anybody ever seen this before? Any info would be appreciated…

What ethnicity?

When I first read this, I thought you were saying that he was wearing two stoles. Now, I’m not sure.

Was he wearing two stoles or one stole?

Not two stoles, two ends.

(Now that I look at the pic I posted, I notice that the other end of the stole can’t be seen. Let’s try another: )

(Please Note: This uploaded content is no longer available.)

Two ends: one hanging down in the front (here, this end is draped over his forearm) and the other wrapped around diagonally (“like a scarf”) and behind. My guess is this is what the OP is talking about… 🤷

I can see the picture.

I was asking the OP what was actually being worn.

We have a Chaldean sub-deacon at a local (Roman) parish. He had emigrated from Iraq with his wife back in the 80’s to another state. His children ended up growing up in the Roman Rite and thus, that is what the family is used to.

He moved to Michigan, where there IS a substantial Chaldean population, but the children are now far more familiar with the OF Mass, than the Chaldean one. So the family goes to our church instead of the local Chaldean one.

he vests as you describe to assist with the distribution of Holy Communion

The appropriate stole for a Chaldean sub-deacon is one which comes up one side of the front, wraps around his neck like a scarf, and then descends down the back.

As a sub-deacon, he has no liturgical role during the OF Mass proper, so he does not vest and assist at Mass. But he is an ordained sub-deacon, so had received the office of Acolyte. As such he is primary when Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion are needed.

He is also a cleric, and thus is entitle to vest when he is performing a ministry within his office.

He does all of this with the permission of both the local Chaldean bishop and the Roman bishop.

Perhaps you saw something similar?

My bet is that Deacon Jeff nailed it and the case is closed! Thanks. Jeff!

It happens to be the very parish that Brendan attends, so that is the answer I needed 🙂

None of those photos was like the one I saw. The left part of the stole hung down normally, but the right side was literally wrapped around the neck like a World War I aviator, and slung over his left shoulder to hang behind him.

You would have seen Subdeacon Mumtaz. We were in Diaconal formation together ( our Seminary trains priests and deacons for both sui juris Churches) so I know him very well. Fine and holy man!!

Mumtaz was going to continue on to become a Deacon, and had the bishops approval, but the Chaldean Patriarch wanted him to return to a Chaldean parish. That would have been difficult on his family, so he stepped back from formation.

I left formation when child #5, and now child #6 came along. I did complete all the academic work though. 👍

Cool – thanks. I live in Rochester Hills and belong to a parish here, but often go over there since it’s a great (read: orthodox) parish.

How did you get him to stick to the wall like that?
I just rubbed him on the top of my head, and just stuck him to the wall 😉

That said, the pic itself was portrait, the upload process seemed to prefer it landscape 🤷

Levitating sideways is a really cool gift.
