I have two questions related to the deaconate:

Listening to one priest on EWTN, I thought he mentioined that his order had permenant deacons; do any orders have permenant deacons?

Second, I was told, by a deacon, that no one has been ordained a priest from the ranks of the permenant deaconoate. Presumably, due to canonical reasons. For example, a deacon’s wife passes away and he, with his bishop discern that he should pursue discernment and formation leading to the priesthood. (Let’s suppose he has a MA in theology form a Catholic institution.) Could this happen or is there a “block” to this scenerio?

Many orders allow for a man to be a permanent deacon. We Carmelites have both ordained and non-ordained friars and there are those who are in the permanent diaconate.

There is no block for a man who is a permanent deacon from later being ordained to the priesthood provided his bishop/religious superior calls him.

I would guess that the Franciscans have permanent deacons, since their founder was one 😉

Carl … good question …

“Listening to one priest on EWTN, I thought he mentioined that his order had permenant deacons; do any orders have permenant deacons?”

– I was reading the USCCB Worldwide Statistics on the Diaconate as of 31 December 2003 usccb.org/deacon/statisticsworld.shtml

PART TWO:
PERMANENT DEACONS IN RELIGIOUS INSTITUTES OR SOCIETIES OF APOSTOLIC LIFE Lists 55 Permanet Deacons in the US

My question is, can a married man become a permanent deacon in one of these societies / movements, such as the Schoenstatt, or am I restricted to working with the local diocese?
