I know this might be a very dumb answer, but… Maybe beside him like in the Tridentine Mass?
Well, the GIRM says the deacon should usually be to the right of the priest, but is this still true when he’s ad orientem? Even when the priest is facing the people when he’s celebrating facing the altar?
To my understanding, to the right of the priest, slightly behind. This is what the GIRM states. There is no different statement for the instance you state. But this is not a specialty of mine, as I have never served as deacon in such an instance; so take my asnwer with a grain of salt!
Of course, in the Tridentine Solemn High Mass, the deacon would be on the step below and behind the priest except during very specific times when he needed to assist at the altar.

He’s in ministry with the priest at this point so he would face the same as the priest. I would think, but again I am no expert in this situation.
Do you think he should, even when he turns around briefly?
