In the Diocese of Austin they require 25 to 30 weeks of availability each month plus retreats and conferences. This is only for the formation program.

Must be some new Calendar. I don’t know any calendars with 25 to 30 hours per month.:confused: 😉

I’m getting ready to visit my old seminary stomping grounds with a best friend, now a priest. I also heard more good news that one of the other seminarians with us not only graduated but went on to become a priest also and now he’s the President of the Seminary and a very good orthodox priest. That just warms my heart. It brings tears to my eyes thinking of this joyous news. I haven’t seen either one of them since we were together. After finding him it was as if we’d have never parted.
 
Reunions such as this are always special. Somehow stories get embellished just a bit which also adds to the joy and humor of the meetings. What’s good is that it seems only the good memories are recalled and the not so good are looked upon with humor.

So true…unfortunately what we’re working on together is to illiminate potential for future negative memories by simply pointing out new policy and procedures that are way over due in some cases. Well intending folks sometimes tend to make very unwise choices and the inocent suffer. The new President-Rector also agrees and has already made many unpopular choices that ultimately receives support by their new bishop. Praise God for a move towards orthodoxy. To many resisdual dissenters trying to create their own church unfortunately. It is never wise to mix high Dissenters…look out. Mixing a high school student population with a college age seminarian population is just not thinking right. The potential for negative is just too great. Thankfully the bishop sees the same problem. It protect the kids and the seminarians.
 
Jesus did say that the gates of hell shall not prevail.

Great thread. I don’t know if anyone has mentioned it lately, but there is a good publication called Deacon Digest magazine. This is put out by the folks in the National Association-NADD.Deacons and those in formation as well as those who feel called to explore this vocation further will find some useful articles. Some articles are written by deacons’ wives, which is so very important in considering this vocation. They have useful up to date Stats. The vision of the permanent diaconate was for the deacon to go where the church is not-soup kitchens, homeless shelters, jails and prisons, rest homes Etc. Etc. The trend has been more and more for the deacon to be busy in his own parish with Sacramental duties due to the priest shortage. My pastor says mabe the original vision was not God’s vision.

you are absolutely correct. I totally forgot to mention this magazine. It is an excellent publication. I would whole heartedly recommend it to anyone who is a deacon, in formation or considering formation.

Greetings:
I have had 3 different hints and I use that word lightly. the first was buying a book from a group of nuns at a meeting of catholics in Charlotte. after buying the book the nun said " that is a good book for a deacon" I was’nt even thinking about a vocation . the 2nd was at a youth retreat. Been working with youth 13 years. During Adoration I had the peace just come over me when I said the line"your will be done" in a prayer I was saying. And the last was after the retreat when I told my wife of my thoughts and she told me she had had dreams of me on the altar with a Preist helping. She said she did’nt want to put any ideas in my head. I told her too late. any help would be greatly apprecaited

I would advise both you and your wife to pray together about this, as the vocation will have an impact on both of you. To different degrees in different diaconate couples. Discuss this with your pastor, confessor or spiritual director. Always seek guidance. Lastly, follow through with the inquiry sessions held by your diocese/archdiocese. They are always helpful. If you follow through and are accepted into formation, be prepared for a wonderful journey of discernment.

FIRST STEP DONE!!!:extrahappy:

I got a call from the Chancery, all my documents are the way they are supposed to be and they got there on time. I also started the first round of interviews.

Now that I have more time to relax and to think about it, I see that I am scared. It feels like the day after I asked my girlfriend to marry me. At least she said yes and after so many years she still helps me being a better husband. I am glad that my family and a lot of people are really behind me on this. I know that I could not do it by myself.

A special thanks to my parents. They are not Church going people; however, they went a few times to speak with the pastor of my parish of origin in Italy to make sure that I would get the proper certificates on time. They are really supportive of what I think to be my call.

It may be an old saying, but the longest journey always starts with the first step.
May God bless you and give you streangth on this new life want to begin. May he send his graces upon you and your family.

Please continue to keep us in your prayers. We are in the discernment period for diaconate. There are 7 of us altogether. I continue to pray for you.👍
 
I’m on my way!!!
I sent my letter of intent in and we had the first informational meeting this week. There were 40 of us at the first meeting. They will be scheduling interviews within the next few weeks.

Keep us in your prayers.
