also, I’m reading the Deacon Directory, and it says that the minimum age for ordination is 35. Does that mean that one can begin formation before 35 if the timeline to ordination culminates at age 35?

Yes, Deacons get to choose where they live, and are expected to hold employment. The Deacon is a servant of the bishop are are ordained for service into their home diocese.

Their assignment is up to the bishop, so it technically could be anywhere in the diocese, but a bishop will generally assign a deacon to someplace within a reasonable commute.

In the Archdiocese of Detroit, there is a standing policy that a deacon is assigned in the same Vicariate\Deanery in which he lives. This lessens the commute time a deacon would have to spend. Doing so is an act of wisdom on the part of the bishop, as the deacon suffers less from 'burn out" and is more responsive to the parish being closer.

There are, of course, exceptions. In Detroit, Parish Administrators ( persons in charge of a parish without a permanently assigned priest) are Deacons. No lay person is assigned this role. Now this is something generally assigned to deacons who are retired from their secular employment, but it could be a substantial commute away.

One other place for support is your local KofC Council. When the Grand Knight heard that I was in formation, he came up and asked me what support I needed. I said “prayers” 🙂

But each term, the council send me a check for $100 towards books.
 
Good Day to all,

I am interested in becoming a deacon (I was actually discerning the Priesthood at one time). I am married and have been for five years now, my wife however, is not a Catholic. Does this bar me from becoming a Deacon? PS: The Marriage has been blessed.
 
do deacons go off to study in Rome? Are they able to hold any positions in the Church, or is it literally the “servant” role? Have deacons written any “popular” Catholic texts?

Study in Rome only on your own dime. Deacons in my diocese serve on many levels, a couple are victors over certain areas, some administrators, the extent of the role depends on the local ordinary. There are some that have written, sorry that I don’t remember off hand who.
