Deacons and Third Order Questions

Can a person who is a memeber of a Third Order later be ordained as a Deacon?

Are there Deacons who are members of a religious order? For instance are there any Franciscan Deacons? If so, are they similiar to permanant deacons in a diocese?

Could a person be ordained a Deacon within a religious order in the same way a priest is ordained within a religious order?
 
The old Third Order of St. Francis, now refered to as the Secular Franciscan Order (SFO), so as not to confuse us with Third Order priests,nuns, and borthers, does indeed have deacons and secular priests as members. The Order was a tremendous help to me during my deacon formation, because it builds a good foundation of spirituality in your life. Our local fraternity (Each local group is called this) has produced two priests, a nun, and a deacon. You can meet with folks that really feel called to serve God in any way that they can. You can discuss your faith journey and hear about the journeys of others. You can discuss items of faith that you probably could not discuss with others, including your own family. There are about 800,000 members world wide.

Thank you. My wife and I are thinking about joining the SFO and I am also discering whether I am called to the diaconate as well. Can a married man be ordained as a Franciscan Deacon? How does that work?
 
Monks can not be married, they live in seclusion. Small cells or housing seperate from other men in a community or within the community.

Monks would be any men living in a religous monastic ommunity such as Franciscans, Passionists, Benedicitines and alike.
 
When you are Ordained a Permanent deacon, this is usually by the bishop of your diocese. Permanent deacons can be married, but must sign a document saying that you will not re-marry should your wife proceed you in death. A permanent deacon may belong to a secular Order like the Franciscans. You are not per say a " Franciscan Deacon." Rather, you are a deacon of the diocese that happens to be in the Secular Franciscan Order. Fr. Corapi tells about a permanent deacon that was Ordained by his Order. This fellow could be single. Usually Orders that I know about don’t have married members, but do have married associates that don’t live with the order. I would strongly suggest that you and your wife visit your local Franciscan Secular Order. My wife and I were accepted into the Order over 10 years ago. This way, you can see if you are called to the Franciscan Spirituality. There are other charisms such as the Dominicans and Carmelites. You might also check them out.

What are the basic differences in spirituality of the three orders?

As others have mentioned, yes, members of Third orders can be ordained permanent deacons. Likewise, diocesan priests can also be members of third/secular orders. I know one diocesan priest who is in the Secular Franciscan Order as well as another who is a Benedictine Oblate.

As for religious, we Capuchins do not have permanent deacons. Every now and then there’s an extenuating circumstance that may result in an exception to the rule, but generally no. I cannot speak for other Orders.
