Dead pets (dog) interceding for one in Heaven?

Well then you disagree with His Eminence Roger Cardinal Mahony who said his cat went to Cat Heaven.
I wonder what C. Mahony thinks now that he has died ! He was wrong on a few other things too. God Bless, Memaw

( It’s nice to know that we’re all so familiar with heaven that we know exactly what it’s going to be like. 🤷 ) (sorry if this sounds rude: just frustrated)

In Genesis the Hebrew word for soul is “Nefesh” It’s the same word used to describe both people and animals. The bible is centered on humans–it doesn’t talk about animals too much. If God has set it up so that animals have an eternal spirit, then God has kept that to himself. It doesn’t concern mankind’s salvation–which is the main thrust of scripture.

“Who knows that the breath of man ascends upward and the breath of the beast descends downward to the earth?” Ecclesiastes 3:21

IMHO

And Jesus? His words on critters?

Are you referring to this innocuous chat conversation with elementary schoolers?? I dont think he was invoking doctrine, just an offhand remark about the deceased status:

Cardinal Mahony: Animals are a great gift of God for all of us! Our pastor at the Cathedral has a dog, and he gets along great with my cats.
Jillian J.: what happened to Miguel?

Cardinal Mahony: Miguel went to Cat Heaven in 2004.
Jillian J.: o may he rest in peace
I agree with you.

Pets are a gift from God to us, and all the pleasure they give us comes from God. He created the animals.

Of course we miss them when they die; and the Lord should be thanked for all the joy and companionship they gave us.

What Cardinal Mahoney said was a “manner of speaking”.

I agree, but that is not what many Roman Catholics such as Cardinal Mahony have said. Further, if you look at post #11, there are pictures of a Roman Catholic Church marquee
from Our Lady of Martyrs Catholic Church which says:
“All dogs go to heaven.” and
“Catholic dogs go to heaven.”
I don’t see how this teaching by Cardinal Mahony and by Our Lady of Martyrs Catholic Church can be true. First of all, dogs are not baptised and do not take part in any religious rite. They are not given Catholic funerals. Secondly, there are vicious dogs out there which have committed terrible atrocities on small children. I would think that they would be punished in the afterlife and not rewarded as the marquee from Our Lady of Martyrs Catholic Church indicates.
I think that the Protestant teaching as indicated on their marquee is correct about this (post #11) and if a Protestant converts to Roman Catholicism, I don’t see how the Catholic Church can give the dog a soul.
It sounds like what was on the marquee of Our Lady of Martyrs Catholic Church was an attempt at humor that could lead others to misunderstand.

And Jesus? His words on critters?
I’m glad you asked 🙂

I love this verse when Jesus said: “not even a sparrow falls to the ground without God”.
The Greek " aἄνευ" means “without” or “apart from” and in its interpretation, most seem to leave it as either “apart from God” or “without God”; others, depending on their own doctrine, have interpreted it as “apart from God’s will”, “apart from God’s knowledge”.
Since I personally believe animals will be in heaven, I like to think “apart from God” means they will never be without Him.

Disagreeing and with your interpretations also.

Wondering where you got that from?

Showing compassion and valuing critters is not the same as thinking they have souls, So what words will show that?

Did you ever see" Whistle Down the Wind?"

So we are all to be, vegetarian logically?

Critters have no,moral sense of right or wrong either,

“Without God” and “apart from God” – I think it means just that – we don’t know what it means. I think the interpretation I “like” is just as valid as those who have added their interpretation as “apart from God’s will” or “apart from God’s knowledge”. That verse says neither of those either.

I’ve found those people who don’t believe animals go to heaven tend to cling to verses that seem to support their viewpoints…same as people who believe animals go to heaven. We don’t know for sure either way.

Being vegetarian…that can be a very long discussion. I had a friend and we discussed this. He made a comment that I found interesting… He said that it is a principle that one life lays down one’s own for another. Maybe it is a spiritual principle in this fallen world of ours. Maybe all of creation imitates its creator–Jesus laying his life down for us. (my friend didn’t believe in Jesus–so I don’t know where his “principle” came from.)

But I know friends can agree and disagree with each other.

I love some of pictures I’ve seen: one was of a family picnic–a nice spread of food, a few people, and a solid but misty-looking dog–problem was, the dog was long dead. And another picture of a woman from the early 1900’s with a cat by her side–but the cat had died several years previous to that.

And several other stories of “dead” pets interacting with the living. Or other stories of people who could supposedly see spirits–one who saw a bird fall to earth, but saw its spirit soar to heaven. And other people who have said that when they put their pet to sleep, they saw a light ascending from their pet’s body. Can ALL of these eye-witness testimonies be dismissed?

But as I said, I believe that pets go to heaven, so I admit to being biased. 🙂

The amazing love that a dog gives his owner makes me want to say that dogs go to heaven … but I have no clue … it could be a possibility … we aren’t God, so I don’t think any of us have a clue for sure.

Roger Cardinal Mahoney’s judgment has been called into question on prior occasions, once by Mother Angelica as to the Eucharist.
  1. Humans = rational souls
  2. Animals = sensitive souls
  3. Plants = vegetative souls
Only rational souls are immortal, as they belong to humans, who are made in the image and likeness of the immortal God. As I recall, Colin Donovan explained the different types of souls on a Catholic Answers Live radio show. To my way of thinking, can someone who elevates animals to immortality have a basic grasp on the faith, such as the unfathomable reality of the Beatific Vision?

To be face-to-face with God and still want fluffy by your side? AYKM?
What is any kind of “soul” but the breath and life of God and while it is capable of rational, sensitive and vegetative powers on earth, where else can it go upon death but back to God.

When I reach the other side and I see a bunch of cats running around, I’ll know I didn’t make it to heaven…

There’s a website called something like “Church Signs” that allows you to put very realistic looking lettering on a variety of church signs. I don’t think those “photos” are real, but instead are products of that website.

But at least you made it to cat heaven, ha. What would life be like without a sense of humor!! God Bless, Memaw

If dogs can go to Heaven, they can go to Hell too.

By the way - when we are raised from the dead, our unique and incorruptible immaterial soul, which is the seat of our identity, will be reunited with what was our flesh… How could that possibly work for animals whose souls are entirely dependent on flesh for existence? It would be just a new animation of matter - which would mean a new soul and a new “identity.”

My opinion is that if we are in heaven, we have eternal happiness…so if we had a pet or pets who died and we love, God would let us have the pet.

We have to somehow bring them or call them to us…I don’t know how though.🤷

Animals do NOT have an Eternal Soul!! God Bless, Memaw

Only in memory, although I doubt we will be very concerned with such things when we are in the Presence of our GOD!!! Everything will be in it’s proper prospective ! God Bless, Memaw

My belief is that what makes us happy on earth and what makes us happy in heaven will probably be vastly different.
Will I be able to go elk hunting in heaven? Highly doubtful, but I also expect heaven to be a far happier place than the best days and times here on earth- of which I’ve had some pretty happy days elk hunting…
