I watched an evangelical protestant preacher on television the other day. He says that all of the people who have died, in the whole of history, are just “sleeping” and are not aware of anything.

They will not be awake again until Christ returns and starts his one thousand year reign. They are neither in heaven, nor in hell. Not really anywhere according to him.

Where does this come from? We know for a fact that someone who was once alive is in heaven. Did Jesus not say to Dismus that “surely you will be with me in paradise today”, or a reasonable paraphrase?

Any ideas about this?

I heard this before, in fact mr. Harold Camping of Family Radio believes and teaches it as well. The main verse comes from I believe the Psalms, where it says: “The dead go to a place of silence.” I don’t recall the exact verse, but it solely rest upon that single one, according to the preacher I heard. Whatever, everyone has his/her interpretation.

I have to clarify that, Harold Camping believes only those who will be sent to Hell are dwelling within a place of silence. You sound like you’re talking about Soul Sleep. Someonelse I’m sure will assist you better.

When Jesus went to raise Lazarus, He said he was sleeping. When he went to raise Jarius’ daughter, He said she was sleeping. When St. Stephen is stoned to death in Acts, Scripture says “he fell asleep”.

But when Jesus called someone dead, they were actually “Spiritually Dead”.

I would assume this is where the heresy the OP is talking about originated, maybe?
