God, please grant me the courage and strength to do what I must for the sanctity of my marriage and family. DH and I had a talk a few weeks ago after catching him watching a racey video online. Since then he has been more helpful around the house and even this week he is getting up to work @ 5am and going to bed @ 8-9. However, in viewing the history on our computer, I am still finding racey websites that he vehemently denies having visited since our ‘talk’ and I desparately want to believe him. He has been so helpful at home and sweet and we’ve been getting along better, so it is very hard to throw that away. I am still trying to muster the courage to talk to our priest, I know I will be going by myself. This is very embarrassing for me to admit to him face to face and I am certain he will advise separation, and our anniversary is next week. Please God, give me the courage to do what I must.

This is a really hard thing to deal with. It can be like an addiction, and very hard to quit.

Do you know if he wants to stop? Is he trying?

Of course, I have no idea how you act when you “catch” him… I recommend being supportive, as in, “Oh, I’m so sorry you fell again, anything I can do to help?”

Visit this thread, and scroll down to the Otaku’s post. It’s really fine advice from one man to another.

**Yes, if he is sincerely wanting to rid himself of this addiction he may be just too embarrassed to 'fess up to you. I think one of the hardest things for a man is when his wife sees him as a “failure”. So in order to do your part in this (and only if you believe he is sincerely trying to conquer this) you need to let him know it is ok to fall…that you will always be there to pick him back up. But what you will not tolerate is being lied to. That you will not be disrespected like that. That his problems are your problems and you will get through this together. That you didn’t expect it to be easy and that falls are a natural part of the healing side of it all. Hopefully your priest will be able to offer some good, marriage helping advice. Have you been to a legitimate Catholic counseler? **

Hi there,

This is such a common problem, I would be very surprised if your priest advised a separation. How would that help your husband?

Do you think maybe just telling your husband how upset you are and how shocked you have been would be helpful? Do you think that disconnecting the internet for a while, or getting a gatekeeper would help your husband overcome his temptation? Do you need to let you husband know he has damaged your ability to trust him? Perhaps you could buy him Adam West’s Theology of the Body?

Unfortunately though, if your husband has a problem in this area, he will need to admit it and repent of it, otherwise how will he find the strength to resist it in the future? I really hope he does.

Pornography is a horrible temptation and I’ve been snared by it before. I was sexually abused as a child and was exposed to pornography. It utterly destroys a person’s understanding of humans as God’s children and turns humans into objects for sexual gratification. It took (and occassionally it still takes) a lot of Grace and healing from God for me to stay clear of this perversion.

I hope you aren’t too upset and hurt by what your husband has done (although I know I would be). All the best.

xxx

Will continue to keep this intention for your husband and your marriage in my prayers,

I wonder why you fear your priest might advise you to separate.
God grant you the courage you ask for and may He cure your husband and save your marriage.

I doubt the priest will recommend separation. You’re married – “…through good times and bad…”🤷

Agreed - just delete the browser history. If you see more stuff pop up, it’s more likely than not that he’s been browsing. If there is an addiction, I can only imagine it’s hard on both of you. Hope things work out.

I think a separation would be a bit much for this infraction. I would hope the Priest would be more encouraging.

Define “racy” are we talking hard core porn or sport illustrated?

Advise separation? Some of you people here are truly beyond belief, you definitely need a reality check. You don’t even know for sure what someone is looking at… or IF and you suggest that it may be worth breaking up a marriage?

If her husband was addicted he would know how to cover his tracks… obviously that’s not the case.

Secondly the OP tells us that their marriage is good, he is working on helping her and they are getting along better. Obviously his marriage is important.

Looking at naked women for arousal is bad, so is gossip… and while I need to check on this one, I would think that suggesting a Holy Covenant be broken because 1 side sins from time to time could be as well.

I believe some people here have an anti-porn obsession and should talk to their priest about that. Maybe it’s because you have low self-esteem or poor body image. I don’t know I don’t know you in real life but frankly I have had to lay off the board recently because of all the “leave him, he’s an addict!” posts.

Yea… break up a home, when so many are failing anyway because a man lusted after another woman in his mind. That IS going to happen no matter whither their is internet porn or the bad stuff on Cinamax or the Victoria Secrets catalog. That doesn’t mean he doesn’t love his wife, it doesn’t mean he is going to physically cheat or anything else… it’s just a fantasy.

Yes it’s wrong but quit blowing it out of proportion. Yes the Bible tells is that a man commits adultery in his heart if he lusts after another women. Please note, in his heart, but also remember that we need to look at the overall context of the passage. If you want to take 1 phrase out of a chapter to focus on rather than the whole books I can sit around and rip problem on our Faith with misinterpretations all day long.

The point is that when you look at the Bible as a whole, Catholicism is Christianity, we are truly the Faith that makes the Bible work. Yet some of you want to pick and choose a verse here and there to prove your point like Protestants then condemn people for a few mistakes. How easily we forget the blank in our own eye or the parable about casting the first stone…

Saddened…

What are you talking about? no one on here suggested a separation. The OP said her Priest would probably tell her to get a separation. Other posters have said they doubt the Priest would say that.

Wow… um, where to begin with this? Okay, when someone gossips, unless the gossip is extremely slanderous in nature, usually it does not do as much damage to a woman’s psyche as knowing her husband is viewing porn!

You are comparing apples and oranges here. The man who pledged to be FAITHFUL to her in good time and bad has breeched that fidelity. That’s the bottom line. And by looking at another woman. Let me tell you what a good friend of mine said her husband’s porn habit made her feel:

“I am not attractive enough to satisfy my own husband, so he looks at other women.”

“He doesn’t trust me enough with his struggles to tell me he has a porn issue.”

“Maybe if I looked more like that, my husband would pay more attention to me.”

“Why does he this, when I’m always there for him and have never denied him sex?”

“I have been 100% faithful to our marriage, why doesn’t he have the same committment?”

“I’m worried that he has been thinking of these things when we have been intimate.”

Her and her husband sought counselling, and it has paid off, but sadly it has been a long road.

Joe, you clearly have no concept of how destructive this is to a marriage, and a woman’s view of herself! Yes, gossip is a sin. Yes, given the right circumstances it might even be a mortal sin. But masturbation and porn is ALWAYS grave matter. And it poisons the marital relationship like few other things can, aside from even graver infidelities of course.

You said “That IS going to happen no matter whither their is internet porn or the bad stuff on Cinamax or the Victoria Secrets catalog. That doesn’t mean he doesn’t love his wife, it doesn’t mean he is going to physically cheat or anything else… it’s just a fantasy.”

Seriously? Well, I’m sorry that YOU seem to have such a low opinion of your brothers, but I for one DO BELIEVE that it is possible for men to be pure and live out their marriage vows!

And BTW, a fleeting, unsolicited and then suppressed lustful thought is vastly different than masturbating to porn.

No one here expects men (or women) to never have such thoughts! But we do expect-- and rightly so-- that when they come, THEY ARE NOT ENTERTAINED.

“It’s just a fantasty?” Gimme a break. But then maybe I just have “a bad body image” huh, Joe?

And to the OP: Sister, there are wonderful Internet filters out there. I have heard great things about BeSafe.com. They have ads on the radio all the time. You should check them out, they are supposed to be the best!

Ok, for clarification, when I caught DH, he had his headphones on, so he didn’t hear me get up to make the baby a bottle and then go to bathroom next to his office. The sites I’ve pulled off of the history toolbar show videos of male/female in action.

DH is pretty savvy at the computer, so I would expect him to delete this garbage from the history toolbar if he didn’t want to be caught.

The only reason I ‘think’ our priest would recommend separation is b/c DH will not take any ‘real’ action to resolve the matter except to quit looking at this stuff, which, if we’re talking about a real addiction here (as DH claims he had in the past long before we met), I’m not sure I believe he’s capable of quitting cold turkey. I know that if I cancelled internet and cable, he could just as easily go buy a magazine and sit in his truck. The other reason I ‘think’ separation would be advised is b/c of a link someone sent me for ‘pureintimacy’ website. Maybe I’m taking even that off the deep end.

No, I do not have a body image complex, thank you very much. The only hard feeling I have is that, while I realize it is harder for DH to abstain as much as we have to in order to postpone pregnancy, I’m pretty well guarded. But I must admit, I am not tempted towards sins of impurity, so it’s a no-brainer to me. If I have lustful thoughts, they are for my husband in anticipation of our next ‘safe’ day. Hopefully by the end of this year, we will have the hang of our new charting method to be able to utilize Phase 1 more. Aside from this, we abstain a great deal b/c of recurring (very painful) staph infections.

Hope that clears up some things. DH seems very sincere to me about overcoming this, I only pray that he is sincere enough to take it to confession and begin going to mass w/ us again and receiving the sacraments - he has not been in about a year. I cannot see any other way for him to steer clear and avoid a relapse w/out the sacraments. I have read other posts of a young man who was intensely focused on the sacraments and repenting and still relapsed for a time, but continued to persevere and overcome. Praying the same for DH.

You’re married. Often sex becomes a casualty of marriage. Try to forgive him and move on. It could be worse.

I want to apologize for my rant… it was uncalled for on this thread.

There have been a number of posts in recent weeks like what I discribed and when I saw the “separation” it just got me all riled up. Add to that fact that I pulled my back out but I’m too busy to rest, I blame vicodin for tone (j/k).

The body image stuff, while possibly cruel is part of the point though as 3 babies pointed out.

This is, in many cases somewhat the fault of the man. Why? because too many husbands don’t praise their wives enough. I’ve heard some men say that they didn’t find their wives attractive before because of x or y or whatever. Truly though those men, at least in my circle of friends, are very few and far between.

Sometimes I’m quite cross with these guys, Oh, because she has stretch marks uh? Was that from bearing your child? We men don’t look the same we did in HS either and those guys that do think like what I described need to understand that every thing that is no longer perfect on someone is probably from an act of love. By cheating or saying someone is unattractive now because of what they did for you is… well disgusting IMHO.

But back to the point about men not praising enough. Part of it is our society with the size -2 models etc… and part of it is how some women are raised but we men know this. Thus I believe a husband should go out of his way to tell his wife how beautiful she is, how much he loves her, how much he appreciates everything she does, and how much their relationship means.

These things strengthen a relationship. If someone knows that a fantasy is just that, then it is. There is no self esteem issue of - he no longer finds me attractive. If Husbands step up to the plate then their wives would know that they had a moment of imaginary weakness, nothing physical.

What some other people don’t realize is that there are many sites now that cater to a more mature audience. Some men aren’t finding the 20 year old college student attractive. They are looking for someone who actually resembles their wife who they would rather be with but can’t do to some circumstance.

This is my point… it’s been my point through many different threads.

If couples talk, love and praise each other then when one fails - should that be porn, talking about someones mother, spending money they shouldn’t, skipping Mass etc… they can work through it.

To the OP, it sounds like you guys have young children. I have a 3 below the age of 5 with one on the way. With all the stuff going on we rarely find the time we need to talk or anything else so we have to make the time. When you get the kid (s) (or perhaps he could help with this so it would go quicker) to bed maybe you guys could just sit on the couch and watch TV and talk. Or read funny stories together on the Internet or crazy YouTube videos. Just something together.

Pornography and/or masturbation fulfills a physical release… but never an emotional one. It’s the emotional bond, the becoming 1 flesh that is what makes a marriage a marriage. Work on that together prayerfully and the other parts will fall into place.

Joe

Joe,
I’m sorry but first of all I fail to see what your post has to do with OP’s husband watching porn. Secondly they do not watch porn because they find their wifes unattractive, That does not have a thing to do with it, watching porn is an addiction that has to do with the man’s proplems with himself.
Your posts tend to blame the whole thing on the woman, if she paid him more attention, if she loves and praises and talks then all will be fine.
Men are looking for older women that look like their wifes??? It is very obvious that you do not understand what an addiction to porn is nor why men do it.

"Men watching porn has absolutely nothing to do with the women in their lives not a darn thing"

Joe I have to disagree with you about the seriousness of pornography. Perhaps I’ve misunderstood you, but it seems you equate pornography with other sin. I do not feel that all sin is equal, do you?

Viewing pornography for pleasure, release or distraction is a grave sin, a mortal sin. The reason is that it objectifies women and men and turns them into commodities, things, unspiritual flesh. It teaches that men and women are beasts to be consumed.

The effect of pornography is not merely physical. It does not leave the emotions unscathed.

Pornography steals away the intimacy from a marriage. It steals the trust, the kindness, the gentleness, the respect, the honesty. It utterly undermines the sacrament.

Pornography steals a husband from his wife and a wife from her husband. Takes his spirit and twists it into to flesh, damages it, tears a great hole of weakness into it, strengthens the lie that a man needs ‘release’ to such a degree that he must seek it out urgently.

I hope this is clear to you - there is no way to minimise the seriousness of even a fleeting attraction to pornography, let alone an addiction. It is a straight and wide downhill road to hell.

To entertain possible reasons for view pornography is simply a further distraction by the devil. There are no reasons for viewing pornography other than that the viewer has failed to overcome a grave temptation which Satan has laid before him (or her).

OP–will pray for you and your dh. Hopefully your priest will be able to give good advice.

God bless!
