Dealing with Contraception

I have no idea where to put this, so please excuse me.
Ok, I have never seen a condom in my life. (Yes, I’m serious). Somehow this got into a conversation with my friend some months ago, and somehow condoms came up in the conversation, I told her I have no idea what they actually look like because I’ve never seen them (again, I’m serious), her response was something like this: “You need to know what they look like, I’m going to show you, even if you don’t use them your kids will need them when they have sex so they don’t get pregnant or get exposed to STDs or AIDS”. Obviously, this made me feel extremely uncomfortable. I’m in high school and someone mentioned to me “It takes you an hour and a half to get a condom on” (don’t ask, everything’s overly sexual for most people in my hs, unfortunately), or there’s protection against pregnancy, use safe sex. etc
Honestly, Lord, have mercy, it all makes me extremely uncomfortable because I obviously feel using artificial contraception is a grave evil. Thank you.

I remember being in PSHCE (personal social health citizenship education)-longwinded I know. We were given a fake plastic penis and a condom and taught how to put one on. Me and a friend (non-catholic!) were like the only people who refused. This is like age 14/15 in England in a non-catholic school btw.

Anywho, good for you sticking up for Catholic teaching:thumbsup: the best way of avoiding AIDS/STD’s is abstinence, condoms can break and they smell bad (spermicide).

I actually think these conversations are a wonderful opportunity for you to enourage your friends to turn away from sin. I would spend time explaining why you don’t believe in contraception and give examples of why it is wrong.

Compare condoms to eating disorders such as Bulimia (where people eat and then purposely throw up afterwards).

If your friends are christian, then ask your friends why God would create an organ that needs a manufactured piece of latex to function properly?? Did God make a mistake when creating Adam? Before the acceptance of the condom, were STD’s and teenage birth-rates out of control or was this something that started as a RESULT of the condom??

Ask them what is the benefit that comes from pre-marital sex…what are the draw-backs??

Debates like this are also an opportunity for you to read-up on the theology of the body and become even more well-informed about your own faith! Remember, just because on the surface people seem hostile towards your faith and look to be trying to bring you down doesn’t mean they actually are! This could very well be their soul struggling to find its way out of the darkness and you could very well be their life line!

You’ve got a great head on your shoulders. If someone shows you a condom, it’s not a sin to look at it or understand it, but kudos to your for maintaining your great sense for what’s pure and right! Always remember that people talk about the “benefits” of condoms – and yes, I suppose it’s nice that disease can be prevented – but we can NEVER directly do something evil, even if it is intended to bring about a good side benefit. So nothing they can say, even if it involves future children of your own, can make using a condom licit.
